the philippine government is genuinely fucked to the point that it gets embarrassing living in this country. the numerous cases of corruption, lies, and incompetence within the government are diabolical. it’s currently typhoon season in the philippines, and, as usual, floods are everywhere. we have been experiencing this catastrophe for countless years, perhaps even before i was born. what’s ironic is that, despite having countless experiences with flooding, they still don’t seem to have any concrete plans to solve the problem. instead, they seem to go by the saying, “filipinos are resilient.” some filipino boomers have even settled for the bare minimum, treating resilience as though it should be enough to compensate for the government’s failures. but that’s another issue. the philippines also lacks accessible educational resources and continues to perpetuate outdated stigmas and beliefs. that’s another topic entirely. anyway, back to the floods. our government has allegedly misused or diverted “pera ng bayan,” which translates to “the people’s money,” referring to taxpayers’ money that is supposed to fund public services and infrastructure, including flood control systems.

instead of seeing the results of these projects, we continue to hear about corruption, questionable transactions, and government officials living luxurious lifestyles while ordinary filipinos struggle. to add the cherry on top, some mayors suspend classes late or sometimes not at all. imagine being a student who has to travel to school while roads and pathways are flooded. students are expected to endure dangerous conditions simply because proper decisions weren’t made early enough. the situation becomes even more frustrating when you consider how long the philippines has been dealing with these problems. flooding isn’t a new phenomenon, and neither are typhoons. filipinos have experienced these disasters for generations, yet the same problems continue to happen year after year. our political system has also become a constant source of controversy. the president has faced allegations and public controversy surrounding drug use, while the vice president has been involved in an impeachment process concerning serious allegations. meanwhile, some senators have become the subject of ridicule and criticism, with one even winning an election largely because of his popularity as an artist. honestly, this entire situation would make a great essay or research topic. there’s so much to unpack: government corruption, disaster preparedness, flood-control projects, political accountability, education, poverty, and the way “filipino resilience” is sometimes used to excuse systemic failures. so a big fuck you to the government.
