Chapter 1 ( part 19 )

          Angelo pov continuation

          She didn’t resist.
That worried me more than anything.
I led her under a small shelter nearby, the sound of rain hitting the roof filling the silence between us.
She stood there, arms wrapped around herself, staring ahead.
          And I stayed.
          Right beside her.
          Not too close.
          Not too far.
          Just enough.
ā€œYou don’t have to pretend with me,ā€ I said softly.
          That did it.
Her shoulders shook slightly, like she was trying to hold it in.
          And then she broke.
          Not loudly.
          Not dramatically.
Just quiet tears slipping down her face as she looked away.
          I didn’t say anything.
          I just stayed.
          Because sometimes…
          That’s all someone needs.

Chapter 1 ( part 18)

          Angelo pov continuation

          That’s when I saw it.
          Her eyes.
          Red.
          Distant.
Like she was somewhere else entirely.
          Something was wrong.
          Something bad.
          I didn’t ask.
          Didn’t push.
I just stayed there, close enough that she would know she wasn’t alone.
And after a long moment, she finally spoke.
          ā€œI missed everything.ā€
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
I frowned slightly, not fully understanding, but I didn’t interrupt.
          ā€œHe needed me,ā€ she continued, her voice breaking now. ā€œAnd I wasn’t there.ā€
There was so much pain in those words.
          So much guilt.
          I swallowed, my chest tightening.
          ā€œYou don’t have to say anything,ā€ I said quietly. ā€œJust… don’t sit out here like this.ā€
She let out a shaky breath, but didn’t move.
          For a second, I hesitated.
Then slowly, carefully, I reached out and gently guided her to stand.

Chapter 1 ( Part 17 )

          Angelo’s POV
          I almost didn’t notice her.
It was just a quick glance at first. A figure sitting in the rain, alone, unmoving.
But something about it felt… wrong.
          I slowed the car.
          Looked again.
          And my stomach dropped.
I pulled over immediately, barely thinking, my eyes fixed on her as I stepped out into the rain.
          ā€œKaira…?ā€
          No response.
I walked closer, my heart tightening the more I saw.
          She was soaked.
          Completely.
But she didn’t seem to care.
          ā€œYou’re going to fall sick.ā€
          Still nothing.
I stopped in front of her, crouching slightly so I could see her face.
          That’s when I saw it.

Chapter 1 ( part 16)

          Kaira pov continuation

          My chest hurts.
ā€œHe doesn’t even look at me the sameā€¦ā€
The words replayed in my head, over and over again.
          And the worst part?
          He was right.
I wrapped my arms around myself, staring down at the ground as the rain poured around me.
          I had missed everything.
And now I don’t even know how to fix it.

Chapter ( part 15)

          Keifer pov continuation

          What Kerien had gone through.
          What I had seen.
          What I had to fix.
          Alone.
I dragged a hand over my face, exhaling sharply.
ā€œI didn’t want you hurt,ā€ I muttered under my breath.
But she wasn’t there to hear it.

          Kaira’s POV
          I didn’t know where I was going.
          I just walked.
Out of the house. Past the gate. Down the street.
The rain had already started, soft at first, then heavier.
          I didn’t stop.
          I didn’t care.
By the time I reached the small roadside garden, I was completely soaked.
I sank onto a bench, the cold seeping through my clothes, but I didn’t move.
          I just sat there.
          Breathing.
          Trying to.
          My hands were shaking.
          My chest hurt.

Chapter 1 ( part 14)

          Kaira pov continuation

          I couldn’t breathe.
          I couldn’t stand there anymore.
ā€œNext time,ā€ I said, my voice is quieter now but sharper, ā€œdon’t pretend you’re protecting me when all you’re doing is shutting me out.ā€
And before he could say anything else, I turned and walked away.

          Keifer’s POV
          I didn’t stop her.
          I should have.
          But I didn’t.
Because part of me knew that if I tried, it would only make things worse.
I stood there, staring at the empty space she left behind, my hands clenched at my sides.
She thought I didn’t want her back.
          If only she knew.
If only she understood what it was like to stand in that house, day after day, watching everything fall apart and knowing there was nothing you could do about it.
If only she knew what he had done.

          Kaira pov continuation

          He didn’t answer.
And that was worse than anything he could have said.
My chest felt like it was caving in.
ā€œHe doesn’t even look at me the same,ā€ I whispered, my voice breaking now. ā€œMy own brother… and I don’t even know why.ā€
          His expression faltered.
          Just for a second.
          But I saw it.
And that hurt more than anything.
          ā€œBecause you weren’t here,ā€ he said quietly.
          That was it.
          That was the final blow.
I stepped back, shaking my head.
ā€œNo,ā€ I said, my voice trembling. ā€œDon’t you dare put that on me.ā€
          ā€œI’m notā€”ā€
ā€œYes, you are!ā€ I snapped. ā€œYou’re acting like I chose to leave you all like this. Like I wanted to miss everything. Like I wanted to come back and feel like a stranger in my own home.ā€

Chapter 1 ( part 12 )

          Kaira pov continuation

          His jaw tightened.
          ā€œI was dealing with it.ā€
          ā€œAlone?ā€ I snapped. ā€œYou decided I didn’t deserve to know?ā€
ā€œI decided you didn’t need to come back to that.ā€
          The words hit hard.
But not in the way he expected.
I stared at him, my breathing uneven.
          And then it came out.
The thing I didn’t even realize I had been holding in all this time.
          ā€œYou didn’t call me… because you didn’t want me back.ā€
          Silence.
          Heavy.
          His expression changed instantly.
          ā€œThat’s notā€”ā€
ā€œIt is,ā€ I cut him off, my voice shaking now. ā€œYou didn’t want me here. You didn’t want me to see it. You didn’t want me to be part of it.ā€
          ā€œThat’s not true.ā€
ā€œThen what is?ā€ I demanded. ā€œBecause right now, it feels like you made that decision for me.ā€
ā€œI was trying to protect you.ā€
          ā€œFrom what?ā€ I cried. ā€œFrom my own family?ā€

          Kaira pov continuation

The silence after that felt sharp.
          Painful.
ā€œHe’s not the same,ā€ I said, softer now, but more dangerous. ā€œAnd you know that.ā€
          He didn’t respond.
          Didn’t deny it.
          Didn’t confirm it.
          Just stood there.
And that silence told me everything.
          My chest tightened.
          ā€œYou knew,ā€ I whispered.
          Still nothing.
          ā€œYou knew,ā€ I repeated, my voice breaking slightly, ā€œand you didn’t tell me.ā€
          He finally spoke.
          ā€œYou weren’t here.ā€
          Something inside me cracked.
          ā€œThat’s not an answer.ā€
          ā€œIt is.ā€
ā€œNo, it’s not!ā€ I shook my head, stepping back like I couldn’t stand being that close to him anymore. ā€œThat’s an excuse.ā€
