Sorry for this rant but I hate the fact that werewolf fanfic/stories over use "mate" like "I didn't need to look at my mate to know my mate was in there." It just annoys me so much that authors over use it. What happened to girlfriend and boyfriend? Or crush. My girl/man. Partner-in-crime. Or what about simply using the characters' name.
For example, "Lily, is perfect. But for me, I'm a monster. I couldn't tell her. Though.. She is mine."
