The Tale of a Teenage Singing Sensation

Chapter 1

Chapter one

Finally my best friend Samantha and I reach the front gate of my house after trudging all the way home from school in the sweltering heat because the bus drivers somehow got it into their heads that today would be a good day to hold a full-scale bus strike. Wrong! Anyway, for once I’m glad to wedge open our gate, which has been in desperate need of an oil for many years now, and hear the familiar, ear-piercing screech it makes.  

We thankfully enter my heavily air-conditioned house and simultaneously let out a sigh of relief to get out of the stifling heat. We then dump our bags, grab a muesli bar each from the kitchen and run up stairs where we kick off our shoes and stretch out on my bed.

Sam and I have been best friends ever since pre-school when I dropped my sandwich on the ground and she asked me to share hers instead. Since then we’ve become as close as sisters. We tell each other everything and know we can completely trust each other, which I know sounds a bit cheesy but I honestly have no idea what I’d do without her.

We flick through trashy gossip magazines and talk about normal things teenage girl things.

“Do you think it looks like I’ve got heaps of break-outs on my face?” I ask Sam as I examine my reflection in the window.

“No way!” She replies almost to quickly. “I wish my skin was a clear as yours.” Which I think is a bit rich coming from her as her skin is as clear as day and has no blemishes on it whatsoever but I decide not to say anything as its to hot a day to have an argument.

“Hey Cal?” She says a few minutes later, in a tone which I’ve come to realize over the years means that she either has an idea or some exciting news. On this occasion it turns out to be a mixture of both.

“Yeah Sam?” I say warily because somehow most of her so-called ‘brilliant ideas’ don’t seem to end that well.

“Look at this! I so think you should enter.” I look at what she is shoving right under my nose and slowly decipher that it’s an advertisement for a new reality TV show where teenagers who are really good at singing compete and the winner gets a record deal with a big Hollywood producer. It is called ‘The Next Big Thing – Do you have what it takes?’ and auditions are this Saturday. I let this information sink in and firmly decide that there is no which I could this and I most definitely will not but from the look on Sam’s face I can tell she has decided the opposite.

“Sam” I say calmly.

“Yeah?” she replies hopefully.

“I have two words to say to you; NO WAY!” By the look of disappointment which quickly washes over her face I see she was hoping for a ‘yes definitely’ or  ‘sure thing.’

“Awwwwwww Callieeee!” she pleads as I watch on with a slightly amused expression. “You’re an amazing singer and I know you would definitely get in if you just tried and it wouldn’t matter if you didn’t anyway because at least you would have no regrets and if you did win then you would be famous and get to move to Hollywood!”

Seeing how earnest and pathetic she looks staring up at me with her eyes wide open I said, “Fine, I’ll think about.” to appease her. You would think I’d just told her that she’d won the lottery by the way she dances around the room but I can’t help also starting to feel slightly excited.

“You’re the best friend ever!” she gushes. “Don’t worry, if you do decide to audition I’ll help with the song choice and your outfit and everything!” which does make me feel slightly better as she is so much better at those things than I am.

Later after Sam goes home I go to bed and try to drift off to sleep but my mind won’t stop thinking about the show. I’m an alright singer and I love to sing, sure, my experience doesn’t go much past performing for the rubber ducks in the shower but really, what’s the worst that could happen if I did audition?
