The trees were swaying with the cool breeze on a summer evening. Birds flew from here to there. The mountains turned purple as dusk overcame the hidden valley.
A small, quiet creek ran through the small area of woods. Deer grazed in a far off field. The shadow of the palace slowly became invisible as the sun began to disappear.
The palace stood tall over the edge of the valley. A small stable off to the side of the palace came to life with whinnies.
The dark gray mare laid in the straw, slick with sweat. Her breathing came in long, deep breaths. Her dark emerald eyes carefully looked over the humans standing a few feet away from her. She glanced over at her colt, struggling to his feet.
He looked more like his father, with a light chestnut coat. He would become darker with age, like his mother, or stay that color until the end of his days.
The dim light shined in the aisle as the King quietly entered the small stable. The mare rested her head against the straw in exhaustion. She was almost asleep, but the groom had disturbed her peace.
"The colt just took his first steps!", said the human, carefully watching me. A lady wearing a pretty emerald green dress came over and looked into the stall.
"Well, well. Now we got something, didn't we Dylan.", she said to the man standing next to her. His gray eyes lit up as he looked me over. "We sure do my Queen.", said Dylan.
Queen? What could that mean. I struggled over to my mother, still laying in the straw. Her warmth comforted me. I knew that I was safe when I was with her.
She slowly stood up. I swayed a little bit, but quickly regained my balance. Dylan came over to me and laid a gentle hand on my back. His gentleness reminded me of my mother's.
I knew that I would be in good hands with the humans here. That night, the humans stayed and watched us as we laid in the straw. It didn't take much for me to fall asleep beside my mother.
In my dreams, I was already running through the lush green grass and jumping over logs and branches. I knew that I would be happy here.
