The Happening

Tears flooded down your face as you ran out the front door of your shabby little apartment which you shared with your boyfriend. You'd fought again for the third time this week because he'd been accusing you of cheating -something you'd never do- and he just wouldn't give it up. He got like this sometimes and you just didn't understand why. You loved him- you really did- but you just couldn't put up with this anymore. The fights would just get more and more violent and this time he put his hands on you, something you'd never expected him to do when you first met.

"Get back here! I'm not done with you yet!" You heard him scream from the front door, you'd already made it to the staircase and you were just going out for a walk to take your mind off things. You hadn't expected him to continue the fight outside where there was the possibility of other people witnessing his poor treatment of yourself.

"Jack no! Please!" You cried out as you faced him from the stairs- a good 50 feet away from your apartment entrance. Far enough that he couldn't put his hands on you from here. That made you feel better- until he started coming towards you. You'd had enough of the physical violence as you were a pacifist and couldn't stand to see others in pain, much less take a senseless beating from the man who was supposed to protect you from the world.

With a wild look in your eyes and fear in your heart you descended the stairs and reached into your pocket to call your best friend- she'd come save you. As you reached the bottom of the stairs and continued the frantic search through your pockets for your only connection to the outside world you realized that you'd left it on the nightstand by your side of the bed. The two of you were just getting ready for the night when Jack stared the argument.

You been focusing so heavily on searching for your phone that you'd forgotten your rampaging boyfriend had been chasing you down the stairs. This gave him enough time to reach and you attempted to continue your run for it but to no avail. He had you and this time there was no escaping him.

It didn't take long for him to start swinging and you couldn't do anything but cry for help as his fists impacted your soft and sensitive skin. The pain hurt so badly you couldn't help but disconnect from your body as your cries grew weaker and weaker- and no one came outside of the safer of their own apartments to come help you, even though you literally lived in the middle of a rather large apartment complex and you knew someone had to have heard you crying and begging for help as your beloved boyfriend mercilessly beat you to a pulp.

You'd nearly given up hope when you'd seen him- the man in the mask. Your ears felt fuzzy and you could taste blood so you weren't sure if he was really real or if he was just a dissociation induced delusion from the pain of your boyfriend mercilessly taking his anger out on you for absolutely no reason.

That was until it all stopped, and your vision had gone blurry and your ears were ringing but you could hear Jack crying out the same way you had just been doing. You didn't want to see him hurt- even though he'd just done the same to you but you couldn't help but be relieved by the fact that you were no longer being a victim of such physical abuse. You tried to lift your head up off the ground where Jack had beaten you into submission but you didn't have the physical strength anymore. You watched a masked man lay into your boyfriend and you tried to keep your eyes open.

"You don't" well placed punch "hit" another well placed punch "women." You heard him sternly command to your hopefully soon to be ex boyfriend as you felt yourself losing consciousness. You weren't quite sure when the world had gone black or when the masked man stopped beating the snot out of Jack but when you opened your eyes for just a second -with all the strength you could muster- you could see the masked man slowly and calmly making his way towards you. When you opened your eyes again he was beside you.

"Are you alright?" He asked you as he cupped your face with his hand. You wanted to answer but you didn't have the strength. You simply let out a breath as you watched the only part of his face you could see turn to black.
