She jumped, missed her footing and crashed painfully into the stone wall. Shaking herself off, Nadia continued to rush down the dim tunnels, her eyes searching for light. I'm going to make it.

Zorion was still far behind her, but she couldn't wait for him. He'd have to find his own way out. Shouts and the echoes of falling footsteps came from the path behind her. Breathing shallowly, she almost slipped on a watery patch of stony floor. Just a few more metres...

She patted her jacket pocket — it was still there.  Her pursuers were still gaining on her like a pack of hungry dogs. Yet it didn't matter as she turned the final corner, and the lift to the surface appeared in front of her. Nadia leapt in, steadying herself against the wall, and hammered at the buttons. The shouts became louder, and the glimmer of a torch-lit up part of the tunnel. Just as the first man neared the corner, the doors groaned to a close. She was safe. They would never risk damaging their one route to the surface. If it collapsed, all of them would be stuck in the dark.

The ground swayed beneath her feet, and she was forced to place her hand on the cold metal wall. Fumbling slightly, Nadia pulled a small object wrapped in a cloth from her pocket. She had to gaze upon it again. The perfect black sphere. The biggest of the six that the world would soon be fighting over.
