DENZYL'S POV

Damn. It happened. Why now? I sigh as I look at the sleeping human. I run my fingers through my hair and let out a huff. I check Devyn's temperature. It is dropping again, so I channel more warmth into him. He stops shaking as I pull the blanket under his chin.

I let him rest for an hour or so before I gently roll him onto his stomach. He moans in response but remains asleep. I lift the end of my too-big shirt on Devyn to reveal the whiplashes covering his back. My blood boils at the sight of the caked blood.

I fight the urge to rip the dendrum who did this apart. Why do we have to be so possessive and protective? Why did we have to mutate this way? Couldn't we have gotten more powers? But no! We just had to mutate to fall in love.

Why didn't I tell him the real reason we got banished is the fact that we can fall in love. It is extremely rare and usually happens once in a demon's lifetime, but it is still possible. It usually happens in the blink of an eye, too.

And why, just why, did I fall in love with a human I bought as a sacrifice?! I knew as soon as I saw his green eyes. The moment I held him in my arms, I wanted to protect him from everything and everyone.

Why does it hurt so much to see him in pain? And why does he want to die so badly???

I have to find him a reason to live.

I cannot tell my clan yet. They will be furious. I have to find a way to keep Devyn from killing himself and from my family sacrificing him.

What should I do? Should I just run away with him? No, that will spook the clan, and they will search for us.

Aghhh! I bite my lip in frustration. Okay, first thing's first, take care of Devyn's wounds. Figure the rest out later. I steady my racing thoughts and begin cleaning the lashes on Devyn's back.

Devyn does not even flinch as I dab the ointments on his wounds. Either he is extremely exhausted or he is used to pain. I suppose it could be both.

I finish cleaning the wounds and turn Devyn over. He moans but stays asleep. I sit him up and lean him against my chest. His head rests on my shoulder as I gently wrap his back.

Once his wounds are bandaged, I slowly lay Devyn down. I give him more heat to fight off Sendrum's cold and bring the blanket up to his chin.

Devyn snuggles into the blanket as I leave to tend to the fire. The sky grows darker as clouds gather. A rainfreeze is coming. This planet is forever dark and cold. The temperature is below freezing, but nothing actually freezes.

Rainfreezes are dangerous and deadly if one is caught in one for too long. The rain is as cold as ice, but it remains as a liquid. The freezing rain quickly lowers one's body temperature, especially a demon's.

Sendrum is the perfect place of banishment for demons.

I look out the opening of the small cave we took refuge in for the night and watch the clouds grow. A slight movement catches my eye. My alarm raises, and I turn around as a rock is smashed into my head.

Blood trickles down the side of my face as I look at Devyn. He starts to run, but I catch him by his waist.

"Let me go!"

"Calm down! I'm not going to hurt you! You can't leave right now. It's dangerous!"

Devyn stops squirming in response to my warning and relaxes a bit.

"Plus, you're hurt. You won't make it very far," I add. I start loosening my hold as Devyn settles down. But Devyn suddenly reaches under his shirt and pulls out a broken shard of sharp rock he found in the cave. With quick maneuvers, he stabs the shard into my side.

I yell out in pain as Devyn takes off his shirt. He whips behind me and wraps the shirt around my throat.

"No, Devyn," I choke as he pulls on the twisted shirt. "You can't...go!" I barely manage to finish the warning before I have to gasp for air. Devyn pulls harder until blackness blocks my vision. My breaths become shallower until I cannot breath, and I lose consciousness.

✨✨✨✨

I wake up coughing. A pool of blood has collected from the shard in my side. I grit my teeth as I pull the shard out. I toss the blood-stained shard aside and look around the cave. It is empty.

A gushing sound draws my attention to the mouth of the cave. The rainfreeze has come.

Devyn! He is out there. I need to find him! I wipe the blood out of my eyes and stand to my feet. Holding the wound on my side, I stumble out of the cave and into the rainfreeze.
