"Hello, my name is Hwang Hyunjin." The boy bows, giving a polite smile. You can already tell the girls are going insane over him, honestly I feel bad for the boy."Okay Hyunjin, you can go sit down next to Minjae." Shit, why me? I raise my hand so he knows where I am, and as he walks down the classroom, everyone stares at him. The girls might as well be proposing to him on the spot. I see why, he is really handsome, but why fall for anyone because of looks? Sure, someone may be the prettiest person on earth, but they could be a total asshole.
Hyunjin doesn't seem like an asshole, though. At least, he's just being polite to make a good impression.
He sits down in the desk next to mine and gives me a smile, I return the favor. I'm not an asshole either. I turn my head though, I don't have any interest in him, much in contrast to the rest of the class, who is head over heels for this pretty boy.
"Let's start the lesson, then." Ms. Han says, turning to the blackboard and writing some math equations that I could care less about. I hate math, what even is math other than a bunch of numbers connecting to other numbers. It amazes me that people find this interesting, even more that they decide to make a profession out of it.
"Hey, Minjae-" Hyunjin whispers as he nudges my shoulder, "Do you have a pencil I could borrow? I'm sorry-" He says, looking worried that I'm annoyed. I'm not, and I toss him a pencil with a smile.
He seems to relax a bit as he picks up the pencil, twirling it between his fingers as he stares at the board, he seems to understand every bit of what Ms. Han is saying.
The small pencil exchange doesn't go unnoticed by the other classmates. I get death stares from the other girls, how dare I let him borrow a pencil? How dare I help him out? The audacity!
Minutes pass, then an hour. I almost dozed off, so the time seemed to pass faster. I'm thankful, I didn't want to endure more death stares from the class, and I didn't want to be in math at all.
"Minjae! Come on!" Felix calls from a few seats over, grabbing his backpack and jacket, as I do the same. The two of us scurry out of the classroom together, as our next class is across the campus and god, this is a huge school.
"Hey, uh- Minjae-" I hear Hyunjin's voice behind me, and I turn around to meet a red-faced boy. "I'm sorry.. I don't know where my next class is, could you help me? I'm sorry.." He hides his face in his hands as I take his schedule to see his classes.
"No, don't worry about it. Actually, I think we have the same class next." I say, and he looks up at me as I hand his schedule back to him.
"Yay! Does this mean we made a new friend?" Felix says from a few feet away, smiling bright as ever. It's always been us two, everyone else seemed to leave our company after seeing how close we were and knowing that there's no chance of ever becoming that good of friends with us.
"Uh- sure?" Hyunjin questions, and the two of us make eye contact, he seems to be looking for my approval.
"Yeah, okay." I say with a small huff, I don't want to make everyone else more jealous then they already are. Hyunjin smiles at me, Felix looks overjoyed.
"Okay, let's go to our next class then!" Felix chirps, and the three of us rush out of the building. How is he so good at making friends? Hyunjin follows after us through the courtyard, the crunch of frost under my feet reminds me of how cold it really is. I dig my chin into the collar of my jacket, of course I grabbed the one without a hood.
Memories of this morning flood back to me. I had no chance of even getting a hat, my dad had already been right there. That's right, I need to check for a mark on my neck, to make sure nobody can tell.
Nearly a minute passes, and the 3 of us rush inside a building, out of breath. The white walls seem cold, making the atmosphere a whole lot chillier. Students are hurrying to their classes, creating a chaos in the midst of the freezing air.
"Hey, I'm gonna run to the bathroom." Felix announces, and turns in the other direction. It's just Hyunjin and I.
"Ah, Minjae.." Hyunjin turns to me, stopping in the hallway off to the side, allowing others to pass. He seems hesitant to continue, like he's about to touch on a sentitive topic.
It's sensitive all right.
"There's a mark, on your neck.. it looks painful, are you ok?" He asks, his eyes filled with concern. Shit, I knew I should've hidden it better..
My hand flies to my neck, and of course, there's a rash-like texture. I gulp, caressing the area, not wanting to explain my situation and unload onto someone I've just met. I don't know if I can trust him to keep secrets yet, or if he'll even handle it well.
"Oh, this?" I ask, forcing a smile. "I- I have a habit of scratching my neck, you see.." Oh God, what am I saying? Now I have to fake a habit..
He can so obviously tell it's a lie, but he doesnt say anything but "Ah, okay."
I nervously laugh, and Felix returns. He gives us a friendly nod and we walk to the classroom, I clutch my books a bit more tightly this time around, nervous of what Hyunjin could figure out.
