Preface

Catalyst:

A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change. A person or thing that precipitates an event.

Taking a seat at the bar, I order a beer, then glance around the place. Looking at the smoke-stained drop ceiling, then their discolored walls, I notice the excited clientele waiting to be entertained for the night. Peering down at my feet, I stare at the cracked tiled floor, waiting for the music to begin.

It's not a total dive, but pretty damn close. They definitely don't keep the old place up. 

Leaning back on the stool, I look at the stage and wait for her to arrive. I'm not here for the atmosphere, just taking a quick look to see if I made the right decision.

Should I be here? Probably not, but I have to know. I must see her, just once.

As the bartender hands me my drink, I look at the glass and the cold golden liquid inside. Watching the tiny bubbles float to the top, I see a very stunning woman's reflection. She walks past wearing a low-cut red sweater and some tight-fitting jeans. I see her checking me out, so I turn away.

When she takes a seat next to me, I sit up and try to act nonchalant. As the bartender talks with her, I realize she's the one I came to see. Pulling my baseball hat down, I take a sip and glance into the mirror to get a better look. Surprised by her beauty, I choke on my beer and cough.

She's the one from my dreams that haunts me every night. How can this be? Maybe I've made the wrong decision after all.

Her voice tickles my ears. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I'm instantly awakened by this woman.

No, it's not possible.

As she orders a picture of beer for the band, I take a quick look at her.

Shit! She caught me, but it was worth it.

As she walks away, I take a second sip of my beer.

I was going to just get a drink and leave, but now I'm intrigued. I must hear her sing, just once, and then I'll go.
