Chapter 22
Juliette
Dressed in a sweater, my hair in a messy bun without any make up I slowly and tried, I walked through the corridor. Due to the lack of sleep I felt like I had been brought back from the dead. During the past week this had been my state, too tired to even care, sad and most of all worried, which had caused me to be awake all night.
By this time Lucy should have been found. At least with everyone that worked on the case there would be something found, but there was still nothing. For each day that passed I grew more and more restless. Even though I had watched the security cameras more than I can count I still hadn’t found anything. The first thing I did after school was to go home and watch the security, and then I sat there until three in the morning. When the clock turned three in the morning I usually took a shower and then went out for a meal. So it had repeated for the past week.
I could see Jaxon worry for me growing for each day of the week. He had done everything that he could to get me on other thoughts. However, everything was useless. Since the day where I went out and got ice cream with Jaxon I had been spending my breaks in school in the library. Somehow it was the only place where I could relax just a little. Worry, regret and the lump in my stomach felt like it was going to swallow me whole. Therefore I went to the library and just sat there, relaxed, sometimes I talked to the librarian. During these past days I’ve learned that she loves books, hates movies, has three cats, and has published two books.
“Juliette!” I heard someone shout after me, taking me out of my thoughts. I stopped in my tracks and then turned around to meet Josh’s tired face, he looked as bad as me, probably because he couldn’t sleep too. Ever since he got the news about Lucy he hadn’t even showed up to school, it was a surprise that he was in school today. I couldn’t blame him, if Jaxon in any way got hurt or kidnapped I would do the same.
“Hey,” he said as he stopped in front of me.
“Hi,” I mumbled, not really in the mood to talk.
“Have you heard anything about Lucy yet?”
“No nothing.”
I could see how this hurt Josh, his eyes got glassy and he tried to not make eye contact with me in any way, didn’t want to show that he was weak.
“You know it’s alright to cry,” I said weakly. At that moment when my words left my mouth I heard a silent sob from Josh. In some way I got him out of the crowded corridor without anyone questioning what was happening. Now we both sat on a bench that was in a part of school that students rarely went. As josh sat down he started sobbing even more. I turned to him and saw how miserable he looked, some tears welling up in his eyes.
“Since the day I got the news I haven’t been able to sleep or eat,” Josh mumbled. I nodded, recognising what he was talking about since I felt the same. Silence rested between us, for once a comfortable silence. Both of us needed to be companied with someone else that went through the same thing, we didn’t need to say anything, still I could feel myself relax more and more, something that I had only been able to do in the library.
“You love her don’t you?” I whispered.
“I don’t know, but it just hurts so much,” Josh said with a shaky voice.
“You love her,” I stated.
“Yes, maybe I do,” he said. After that we sat in silence, a silence that I enjoyed. Though there was one problem, after a while it became too silent, a silence that was giving me goose bumps. Earlier you could hear students talk, the sound of feet running against the floor in the corridor not far away, even sounds from phones calling, now there was nothing.
That was when a loud sound came from not far away from us, it was indescribable. For a while everything became a little warmer, like a wave of warmth. There was a beeping sound in my ears that broke out due to the loud sound. Screams then brake out and I could sense the smell of smoke. Josh was on his feet before I could even react. I was as frozen on the bench. The temperature in the room felt colder, or was it only me? I looked at my hands that rested in my lap, they were shaking. Everything happened in a slow motion, I took a deep breath in.
“Juliette!” A dark voice screamed from far away. My eyes moved to where the sound came from. A blurry Jaxon came running towards me. Not soon after I was in his arms, he carried me out of the building. Silent mumbles came from Jaxon, I could take out some of the things he said, and all of them were just things he said to comfort me. As we got further away from the building I noticed a whole bunch of students were gathered. Every student stood there and looked towards the school. Jaxon turned slightly and that was when I noticed what everyone was looking at.
There was just half of the school left, the other part was in flames or destroyed. There had been an explosion, a large one. And I knew who was behind all of this.
