*LYDIAS POV*
I had known him all my life. Harry Edward Styles was born on February 1st 1997. I-Lydia Williams-was born only a short month later, March 10th of the same year. Harry's mother Anne had been close friends with my mum starting in elementary school and throughout college. After college they decided to move into houses next to each other in the small, peaceful town of Cheshire. Our neighborhood was mainly made up of retired couples and middle aged people who never had children, so Harry and I spent a lot of time together.

At age 2, we would play together in the sandbox. I brought my dolls and toy horses out to the sand box and Harry would bring some cars and monster trucks. He would crash his monster trucks into one of my dolls and snicker a little, giving the classic dimpled side smirk that he has always had. Little tears would well up in my eyes- I was only 2, delicate, fragile, and breakable. When Harry noticed this, even at the young age of 2, his eyes would soften and he'd lean over to me and give me a quick hug, to which I replied "COOTIES!" causing both of us to burst out into fits of laughter.

At age 5, we started kindergarten. Of course, Harry and I went to the same school-Pinewood Elementary School. We took every chance we could to sit near each other. When we weren't sat together in class, we would make funny faces at each other until one of us laughed too loud, earning a stern look and a few harsh words from the teacher. After school, we rode the bus together. Harry would always save me a seat next to him on the bus, and when we were dropped off at our bus stop we would race home. I always fell behind Harry. He was a quick runner-his tight brown curls bounced with his fast paced steps. But Harry was a good sport, even at age 5, he would give up his bragging rights and slow down so I could catch up to him. Running side by side, we would hurry into Harry's house. Anne always seemed to have cookies baked.

One day, when we were 12, I went over to Harry's house like I always did and saw him sitting on his couch with a girl named Melody from school. I walked over to them, a slight frown evident on my face, my eyebrows furrowed giving me a sad, innocent, and clueless expression. I sat on the floor below the part of the couch where Harry was sitting and said nothing, listening to their conversation-although there wasn't much of one going on. I sat there until Melody's mom came to pick her up.

"Why was she here?" I questioned.

"She's my girlfriend," Harry stated, wiggling his eyebrow and letting out a little giggle. I kept a straight face and blankly stared into his emerald green eyes. He realized I wasn't phased, and more seriously said,

" It's ok Lyd. You'll always be my favorite girl and you know that."

I smiled at him.

"I just like her because she's pretty. You are much more fun to hang out with. You're more than just pretty. "

He spoke with heart, everything he said was so much more intelligent and thoughtful than your average 12 year old's words. I got up from the floor where I had been waiting to resume my usual spot next to Harry on his couch. We turned on tv, and even though we were 12 and Harry was dating Melody and there was some cartoon on the tv, it was obvious that somehow we were both paying more attention to each other's presence than anyone going on in the imaginary world of cartoons. I rested my head on his shoulder, his curls tickling my cheek. I felt him chin move, I could tell he was smiling. I smiled too, without consciously noticing.

By the time we were 15 Harry had dated a few girls here and there- nothing ever lasted. I had also dated one boy before, but it was nothing really special. It was Valentine's Day. school had been snowed out. I was sitting in my room under layers of blankets, drinking hot chocolate and watching Ghost Whisperer. The doorbell rang. I went to get the door and saw Harry standing there, heavy plastic bags from the grocery store in his hands. His chocolate brown curls were barely visible beneath the sheets of snowflakes that had accumulated on top of his head. He wore a long black coat and a bright orange scarf.

"Can I come in?" He said, voice shaky, a visible cloud of freezing breath exiting his lips as he spoke.

"No," I smiled jokingly.

He gave me a little push and let himself in, taking his shoes off at the door before walking into my kitchen to set the bags he had been holding down on the kitchen table.

"I got you some stuff!" He said enthusiastically. He dug his hands into the shopping bags and pulled out two pints of Ben and Jerry's ice cream, a huge heart with chocolates inside, a bag of fancy Swiss candies and chocolates, and a small teddy bear wearing a red sweatshirt with a pink heart on it. The sweatshirt pulled over the little plush near read "forever."

"Thanks Styles," I smiled.

He wrapped his strong arms around, bringing me in for a hug, mthen asked, " Can you promise me something?"

"Sure," I replied.

"Can things be like this between us forever? I mean maybe one day we'll get into a fight. As we grow older we are going to meet so many other people, they're going to become our friends. But please promise me we will stay like this. I want us to be close, like our mums."

"Yeah of course.." I trailed off, "I want that too."

"Together forever?" He asked.

Word of friends, but words that felt like more...

"Forever and ever," I laughed. There were a few silent, awkward seconds after that before Harry picked up the Ben and Jerry's ice cream and shouted "Let's eat this now!" We grabbed some spoons and went up to my room. Lots of people-especially adults- think it would be peculiar for a young 15 year old girl to allow a boy to sit in her bed with her. I didn't think so. Harry didn't find it weird or uncomfortable. Our parents never minded. So we sat in my bed because with us it wasn't weird, it was ok. Harry and I continued to watch Ghost Whisperer, but I wasn't paying attention. I was thinking.

We sat in my bed and I thought. I thought about forever. I hoped Harry and I would be together forever. I sat in my bed with Harry at age 15 on Valentine's Day, thinking about promises, thinking about words, thinking best friends. But there we were, sitting on my bed after that promise; sitting too far apart to be lovers, of course, but still too close to be just friends.

That was then. Now we are 18. Everything changes when you are 18.
