Chapter 1

JAMES' POV

As I walked through the busy platform towards the train, I suddenly heard a shout. I turned round to see Remus, who embraced me and proceeded to ask about my holiday. After a while of waiting for the others, we decided to go ahead and expect them to soon catch up. We trudged through the train and searched for an empty carriage when Sirius grasped my arm and hauled me into one suddenly. I was confused for a moment as to why we were in here until I saw that Remus had hugged a girl so tight that their lips were nearly touching. My eyes grew as I realised who he was clutching, Lily.

Sirius had a relieved look on his face when I spluttered; "You finished?" as a nervous smirk grew across my face. Remus instantly jerked his head and let go of the confused Lily, smiling at me awkwardly, Lily glared at me in contrast and replied coldly with "Potter". This was typical of her as she seemed to despise me. I was about to reply when Peter burst through the door. I immediately smiled and took my eyes away from Lily and began to talk to them. Remus then decided to exit the carriage to see if there were many remaining ones left.

About five minutes later he came through the door again and informed us that they were all full. Lily then sighed deeply as we took a seat in her carriage. Lily was immersed in a book to no-one's surprise, Alice and Marlene were playing a game of chess together and Remus, Peter and Sirius were playing exploding snap. I just sat in a gaze fixated on Lily as I watched her read the book. She would start smiling at some points and frowning at others, over the years I've found out that she did this subconsciously. This is why I loved to watch her read, it was like she was in a world of her own. Staring at Lily was something I did a lot, sometimes I wouldn't even realise that I was doing this. One minute I am thinking about quidditch and then my eyes just wonder over to her. "JAMES" came a voice, I jumped slightly as I snapped out of my gaze. It was Sirius. "Tell everyone the news that you got over summer, Jamie" I smile as I had forgotten all about the letter the Dumbledore had sent me.

"Oh yeah, I'm head boy" I say casually. Lily then sounds as though she is about to choke on pumpkin juice and stares at me as though I pulled another one of my pranks. "You what?" she said, shocked. "You rascal! Why didn't you tell us this sooner?" She said as she nudged me, hard. "I am head boy" I repeated. She continued to stare at me, before looking at Remus for conformation. He just nodded at her as if to say 'he is telling the truth, I'm sorry to say.'

"Oh, well congratulations" she manages to spit out, though I notice Marlene and Alice are now sniggering and Lily is sending a death stare. "What?" I say to them. Alice giggled. "Just that Lily is head girl" I smirk while Sirius is laughing "Guess you're stuck with me Evans then" I say, blushing. I heard her mumble something to her friends, making them laugh a little.

After a while, we were all talking casually with the exception of Lily, who was still engrossed in her book. Suddenly, the door swung open. We all swerved around to see who it was and I looked around. I automatically stood up. Snape! "Lily, can I speak to you outside please?" he said, stressfully. I looked at Lily who was still staring at her book obviously trying to ignore him. "No" she replies simply. "Please?" He said with desperation quivering in his voice. "I don't want to talk to you Snape" she replied. He looked hurt that she used his last name and responded with "I really need to talk to you." "You have already said enough" "but I need to explain myself" "I don't want to hear it Snape" "So you can stand being around James now but not your best friend" "Yes Snape, I can't stand being around you but I can stand being around James. James is an ass but you were my friend, my best friend. You hurt a lot more, so please just go, I don't want your excuses. I just want to read my book in peace" "but-!"

I then decided that all he was doing was hurting her, and she had made it clear enough that she didn't want to be near him. "Snape, she has said she doesn't want to talk to you, so do us all a favour please and leave her the hell alone." I said it in a warning tone, and he looked again to Lily who was covering her face with her book, smirking silently. He glared at me before leaving.

"Thanks"  Lily said to me, smiling. I almost respond when I remember something: "You called me James" "What?" "You called me James and him Snape" I smirk "I also called you an ass" "Yeah I guess, but you still called me JAMES" "Did I?" She said, blushing.

I smiled at her as she looked away with a small blush on her cheeks. Sirius then gave me a triumphant look and we burst into laughter while Alice and Marlene whispered to Lily, making her blush even more. I stared at her for a while as she started to look at her book again. Everyone then started to be more calmed after the Snape incident.
