The pounding of my heart in my ears was intense as my feet thundered through the forest. I could see the man, but I could clearly hear the beasts. "Why didn't I just turn during this moon!" I screamed at myself internally. Just then something brought my feet to a screeching halt. These wolves had to be here for a reason, there was no way this was just a coincidence. They were on their way up to my pack, to my family, and for what? To challenge Silas for dominance? To rape, pillage, and kill? Whatever the reason, no alpha, no wolf pack would turn this close to another pack's territory lines unless it was for an unsavory reason.
The man stopped to see why exactly he couldn't hear me running behind him anymore. He turned to see me standing firmly planted, wand drawn, knees bent, ready to take on the wolves. He yelled "Are you CRAZY!? You're going to get yourself killed! And me!" I took a deep breath, "Then leave me." "NO!" He retorted. I didn't exactly have time to explain that I needed to execute or kidnap the alpha of the pack so the others would lose interest in their mission and my pack would be safe, so I didn't.
Just then a rust colored wolf with yellow eyes came charging out of the trees in front of me. I quickly somersaulted to the left just as another wolf came shooting out behind the last one. I shut my eyes quickly searching for the other wolf, the alpha. I owned his scent. I inhaled deeply, ears fixed on the woods in front of me. Suddenly I heard him, he was on my left in a nanosecond and I had no time to react. He charged into me knocking me to the ground and seizing my right arm in his jaws, pain rippled through me like an icy burn. My wand fell to the ground as I kicked and bucked beneath the wolf, trying anything to get the massive beast off of me. My arm was caught in his jaws so perfectly that the only thing I could do was cry out. I needed to act faster than this or the pain would be too blinding to endure. I took my left thumb and jammed it into the wolves eye sockets, twisting and turning it around until he finally let go of my arm. He backed up and I took my opportunity to cease my wand now with my left hand. I needed to collect myself and devise a plan.
I couldn't take my eyes off of him, now that he had tasted blood he would be back for another bite. I fastened my arm to my chest knowing no spell would help my puncture wound heal. It was the wolf saliva that made it fatal to some wizards and an entire list of magical creatures. "Focus, focus. Ok how can I get him to follow me without killing me?" I thought to myself. Ah ha! A Hail Mary of a time this would be. I stowed my wand and instead reached down to unfasten my belt. I quickly fed one side through making a noose with it and stared him down.. Three.. Two.. ONE! I started sprinting toward the alpha as he took off towards me, a game of chicken, but I had a plan.
In a flash jumped to the right and threw the belt loop around his thick neck, he began dragging me and all I could hear was the wind leaving his lungs and the loop tightening around his neck. The wizard with the blonde hair was yelling after me but it was short lived as he had one more wolf to tussle with. As soon as the alpha came to a screeching halt, I yanked as hard as I could in the opposite direction and began running for my life. I yelled at the wizard, "LET'S GO!" He yelled back at me "LEAVE THE BLOODY ALPHA!" I ignored him and continued to drag the wolf with all of my might towards the port key but suddenly he became lighter. I looked behind me to see the wizard had grabbed the leather belt and was now hauling the wolf running after me. The port key came into view ahead of us and I was clutching my arm throbbing with pain to my chest.
We finally reached the manky old boot. The wizard said "hold tight, I've got him. On the count of three.. ONE. TWO. THREE!" We both seized the boot at the same time and we were thrown sky high in a whirlwind. I felt my grip slipping, he must've noticed because he suddenly let go of the wolf mid port, and reached out to secure me. Before I knew it, our stop had arrived. The wizard held my arm tightly and swung my body into his arms as he secured me to his chest and seemingly walked on air until we were back safely on the ground in the small Italian town of Lago Lugano.
My body was now shaking, the pain blinding. "Di-did y-you let go o-of the the alpha somewhere safe?" He looked down at me concern stretching across his beautiful face. I didn't like the way worry looked on him, it made me sad, it made me want to move heaven and earth to make him smile again. "Yes." he said briefly. "That's g-go-good." I was seconds away from passing out and I knew it. "There's a wizards tavern with safe rooms 3 blocks from the port key called Hotel Europa" the words escaped me like a furious wind. Suddenly the wizard started scrambling "No no NO NO COME ON STAY AWAKE STAY WITH ME GIR-........."
