The first week came and went. (Y/n) didn't even realize how much time had passed by until Ms. Red mentioned the date. She spent the first week alone and far away from everyone else, usually sitting alone on the wooden swing right next to the garden of rose bushes.

Ertongrow was a lot warmer than where she used to live. The sun is always out and keeping everyone warm, so warm to the point they're all sweating. Still, she always has on warmer clothes. Clothes that hide her body, hide her skin and emotion. Most people think she is just too sad to be around and for the most part, their right. The children that pass by the rose garden give her side glances and frown to each other. This doesn't go unnoticed by (Y/n) either. But it's not like she'll say anything about it either.

Today is the same as it has been the first week. (Y/n) sits on the wooden swing right next to the rose bushes and just admires how each rose was made.

"The roses are beautiful right? I planted them myself" Ms. Red brags, scaring (Y/n) causing her to jump.

"Oh. I didn't see you there, and yeah i suppose." her grip tightened on the ropes.

She watched as Ms. Red walked closer to her and placed a hand on the swings ropes as well, "Didn't mean to scare ya, just checking in on you. You haven't interacted with any of the other kids, is everything alright?"

(Y/n) looked up as Ms. Red and squinted due to the sun, "Yeah I'm fine. Sad is all."

Ms. Red crouched down, "Your heart will recover, I'm sure dear. But I need to have a talk with you. Mind walking with me for a bit?"

(Y/n) wanted to scream at Ms. Red. Scream that her heart will not recover, and that she herself will never be the same. But instead smiled and got up to walk with her.

"Well I've been thinking lately, about you. How would you feel about having a mentor?"

"Mentor? Why what for?"

"You see, usually after children your age go through something terrible and heart wrenching, they don't do too well in school or life for that matter. If I hire you a mentor, someone to advise you; train you. It will make everything so much easier on you!"

Her voice was ecstatic thinking what she was saying was good. (Y/n) knew she was trying to help but hated the fact that she even needed help.

"Thank you Ms. Red but I don't need one" she said flatly and turned around to return to the rose bush garden.

"Wait! wait, just think about it okay? It's a very very good idea and maybe you just need some time to think about it. I'll check in with you tomorrow, sound good?" her face screamed 'please say yes'.

(Y/n) smiled and nodded before turning back around and rolling her eyes.

Once she got back to the swing she plopped right down and stared at the roses. Remembering how her mother always loved roses and would plant them all over the house, put them in vases and use them as gifts. Her mother loved every color of rose there, but red was always her favorite. (Y/n) was never sure why and she never questioned it.

She reached down and plucked a rose from the bush, biting her lip in pain when her finger poked a thorn. Out of spite she dropped the rose and crushed it with her foot, smashing it to the ground and then scraping the excess off her shoe.

She was angry at her mother for just leaving her like that. Leaving her all alone and then sending her to a bunch of people she had never met. Stuck with a bunch of people who pretended everything was just fine and okay.
