Introduction:

THE UNIQUENESS OF THE BOOK OF ESTHER

The book of Esther is the second book in the Bible named after a woman. The first is Ruth. The book tells the story of a woman who is beautiful both inside and outside her obedience to the counsel of her cousin / father at all times her desperation to dare death is indescribable. It is only comparable to Stephen and Jesus.

The book is the second book in the Bible where no mention is made of God in its entirety, another one is the songs of Solomon but the hand of God is seen on every page of the book, working wonders among his people, the Jews.

The story is about an ordinary slave girl, an orphan who lives with her older cousin in a strange land, she was destined  for greatness and special assignment of delivering God's people from utter destruction.

The author of this special and unique book of the Bible is not known, He did not make any reference to any other book or story in the Bible neither any reference to the Bible is made by any other writer in the entire Bible. For this reason. It is recorded in some reference Bible that some church father questioned the inclusion of this book in the Bible.

The book has ten chapters and 165 verses only. You may want to read through the book of Esther from any version of the Bible that interests you most before you continue reading this book.

CHAPTER 1

QUEEN VASHTI DETHRONED

The book of Esther opens with the introduction of king Ahaseurus, his glorious and splendid kingdom which he was set to show off for one hundred and eighty days (180 days)vs 1-4, he then celebrated a feast for seven days for all the people in his kingdom. Verse 5.

Queen Vashti also made feast for the women in the Royal Palace for seven days. When the heart of the king become merry with wine he commanded the seven eunuchs who served in his presence to bring the Queen to show her beauty to the people and the officials, for she was beautiful to behold, but queen Vashti refused to honour the king's invitation. This led to her being dethroned from being the queen. Her attitude was considered to be a disregard to the throne and authority of the king as her husband, Memucan, one of those closest to the king advised the king to dethroned her and give her "royal position to another who is better than her" verse19, it shall become a lesson for all other ladies in the land to honor their husband both great and small" he reasoned.

The counsel was pleasant to the king and it was written and sealed with the king's seal and it was sent to all the kings' provinces.

WISDOM FROM CHAPTER ONE

1.                  There is no reason to be pompous over what God has put in our care in terms of possession, goods and property, since no man receives a thing - unless it is given from above. God is the ultimate source of all that we possess instead of being boisterous about it one should just give glory to God for life and grace to be able to possess those possessions. Being boisterous or proud about our possession may make one to misbehave as king Ahaseurus did.
