Chapter 2

     That weekend marked not only the quidditch match but also a Hogsmeade visit the next day for the first time the marauders could remember at Hogwarts. "So the plan," James called loudly through the Gryffindor common room after classes had finished for the day, "is to crush Ravenclaw's arse!" He paused briefly as members of the team whooped in response, "and celebrate on Sunday at the three broomsticks!" Many other Gryffindors chorused their excitement as well.

     Remus could hear Louise telling Sirius that he was going to do great and though he disliked her he was happy that at least she was encouraging him instead of tearing him down as she so often did. "Hey, Remus could I talk to you about something?" Remus turned around to see Lily standing behind him.

     "Of course, what's on your mind?" He asked leading her to a quiet corner.

     Lily hesitated for a moment to decide what exactly she was going to say, "It's about James..." she started, Remus nodded he figured she'd ask him to t ok ll James off soon. "Why does he act the way he does around me? He says he's in love with me but he's so annoying and rude that there's no way he's really trying to get me to go out with him."

     Remus was slightly surprised by Lily's question but answered anyway. "He really does like you, he's just... stupid to say the least. I'm not sure why he thinks that hitting on you and showing off is a good strategy."

     "He doesn't know me, he can't like me if he doesn't know me, he just likes the idea of me." Lily fiddled with the hem of her sweatshirt though Remus couldn't tell if it was out of anxiety or annoying.

     "Do you mind if I ask what's brought this up?"

     Lily sighed looking at her feet then looking back at Remus with a sad face. "Severus likes the idea of me, he doesn't really like me. I've decided I don't really want to speak to him anymore, he's getting involved with the wrong sort of people and I don't think I can help him."

     "Lily," Remus put his arm on her arm to show he was being sincere. "It's not your responsibility to help everyone. You have such a good heart and an incredible mind, but you need to know that you aren't responsible for helping others, especially if the yet don't want to be helped." Lily nodded looking sad, Remus continued, "I don't know if this helps, but I want you to know that I like you for who you are, and not just the idea of you. You are really incredibly Lily Evans." Lily smiled and hugged Remus tightly hiding her face while she blinked back tears. When she looked up she saw James standing with his mouth open and an unreadable expression on his face Sirius looking shocked next to him. He turned and booked it up the stairs with Sirius chasing after him.

     Remus heard them run and turned around to see what had happened. Confused he looked back to Lily. "I think you should follow them, I'm sorry. Oh and Remus, could you do something for me?" He nodded, "Could you tell James that if he wanted to get to know me he could start by being nice and having a conversation with me?"

     "I can definitely do that, and don't stress about Severus so much, focus on the people who love you." Then be turned and went up to the dorms taking the steps two at a time. He pushed open the door to the dormitory and saw James sitting on his bed looking very disgruntled with Sirius next to him patting his back. Both boys look up to see Remus standing at the door and James gave him what might have been a glare."What happened James?" Remus asked walking closer.

     "What happened? What do you mean what happened?!" He cried outraged, "you were flirting with Evans when you know how I feel about her!"

     "I was not flirting with her, I was comforting a friend James."

     James stood up looking angry "I heard you telling her that you liked her, all about how she was amazing and kind and smart"

     Remus sighed, "You don't understand, she was upset because people only like the idea of her and not who she really is, I was telling her, that as a friend, I like her for who she is."
