My cheek had turned an ugly brown and yellow color. I put ice on it and my neck every so often to keep any swelling down. My neck felt like I had slept wrong so I prayed time would heal it.
My arm also had a bruise on it from where Mr. Todoroki had grabbed me so hard. Shoto didn't know about it and I wasn't going to tell him.
It was late at night, the same day of the incident, and Shoto was in his office. He was gathering evidence against his father to present to their lawyer.
I had spent time alone in our room. I checked the clock to see it was almost midnight and finally put my book down. I sighed and got out of bed to see Shoto in his office.
I waited outside the door and took a deep breath. Keeping one hand on my chest, I used the other to open the door.
Shoto looked up at me as I entered. I slowly closed the door but didn't take my hand off the handle. "I'm sorry," I said. "For today. And especially for lying to you...I didn't...I didn't want you to say no to my idea. Which is...a stupid reason for lying."
He took off his glasses and stood up. I kept my face turned at an angle so he wouldn't see the bruise and leaned back against the door.
He kept one hand in his pocket and placed his other on the top of my head. He leaned down to press his forehead to mine.
"I'm sorry too. Can we start over and promise not to keep secrets anymore?"
I nodded and he lifted my face with both hands, his eyes looking over the bruise. When he met my eyes again I looked away. His hands fell to my arms and kissed my forehead.
"Thank you for coming down. I'll be up in a little bit." He kissed my good cheek and squeezed both my hands.
"Where do her parents live?" I asked when he walked back to his desk. "Your mother."
He sighed. "In the United States, actually. Why?"
"Um...sorry that I didn't show this to you sooner." I opened my phone and pulled up the pictures of the emails. I handed it to him and he read through them.
His face was passive but I could see the muscles in his jaw working. He was angry.
"That son of a bitch," he said after some time. He looked them over a second time then looked up at me. "You found this over there?"
I nodded.
He dropped the phone on the desk and I took a step away. His arms wrapped tightly around my shoulders and my nerves settled almost instantly.
"Thank you."
I didn't answer. I stared into his shoulder and tentatively returned the hug. He pulled away only to cup my face and kiss me on the lips.
"I don't know if I can use it in the case because of how you found it but now I know to contact her father. Why didn't I think of that sooner?"
He handed my phone back and immediately pulled up his email. He told me I could stay but I resorted to going back to the room.
On my way back I went into the kitchen to get ice for my arm. Shoto's hug made it hurt again and I figured the ice would help. I also made sure to take more pain medicine.
I don't know when he came to bed but the next morning he was attached to my back with his arm draped over my shoulder.
I turned over to look at him asleep, careful not to rest my bad cheek on the pillow. It woke him but only for a moment to register my face and fall back asleep.
The sheets seemed awfully hot as I leaned in and kissed his neck. My heart was racing as I made my way up his neck and to his cheek. I had seen it in a movie back in high school. I hoped it was the right thing.
