"It looks like we'll have to walk," I said to Ruby, breaths my words gushing out into the air, as I chafed my arms with both my hands. We stood outside her home, patiently waiting for her father, Mr. Stone, to repair the car that was supposed to give us a ride fifteen minutes ago. It wasn't like my mother could've fulfil the matter, cause she had taken the car without much of a care, though I didn't really informed her of where I'll be going tonight. And that seemed like an ultimately good idea, for I knew she wouldn't put in any considerations to any reasons.
The temperature was getting colder by the second, and though I wore a thick purple polka-dot sweater -cutesy as a gift from my dear friend Kelly- I could still feel the cold nipping my arms; teeth chattering and body shivering uncontrollably. Because it was nearing summer, you'd expect the time to be much warmer. But, seems as if nature thought to put things into her own hands. I guess Ruby's no picnic from how tranquil she seemed.
"Just hold on, my father will be finished soon," she said, rubbing her feet against the rocks amongst the dirt.
"Well, that's what you said four minutes ago I can't wai-"
"Shush!"
I immediately frowned at her for shushing me, before I rolled my eyes and turned to watch Mr. Stone in an upsettingly manner as he fixed the car. He went under the hood, with his having a tool I wouldn't know, working on the engines. He briefly took a cloth resting on top of the hood and wiped his face before started working again. I heaved a heavy heath through my nostrils knowing that this would take a lot more time than I expected.
My lips were pursed to await the time though, but I got startled when the hood suddenly closed back shut with a heavy bang, and Mr. Stone's head popped out. Immediately, his eyes met mine and my hands fell to their sides as a sudden shudder ran down my spine... and not from the cold.
"I think we should walk," I hesitantly whispered to Ruby.
She turned to me. "Why?"
I pursed my lips again. "Lets us say, ummm... your father is a bit intimidating," I continued to watched him looking at both of us as he wiped his hands. "Even at the dinner, he didn't smile at all," I said to her.
"Ugh, Mia stop being dramatic, my father's just a serious man."
"Does he smile?" I couldn't help but asked, looking at Ruby.
She gave me deadpanned look. "Again, he's just serious. Stop being weird."
"Ok I think it's ready now. Had to give it a lot more repairs than I thought. Sorry for taking so long girls," Mr. Stone said as he walked up to us.
"It's okay Mr. Stone," I smiled at him, possibly awkward and a bit abashed at his presence. He stopped to give me raised brow and a weird look as an indication that I need help. I let it drop after realizing that I do.
"Ok, let's get in the car."
"When will the mechanic see to it dad? It's been four days already," Ruby complained as we walked towards the car.
"Hopefully soon, now get in."
"Not before trying some of my homemade cookies," sang Ruby's mom, Mrs. Stone as she appeared on the doorstep holding a tray of freshly-baked cookies. I didn't have a liking for sweets or any food containing sweetness in particular, but without much thought, I took a few before I walked back and went into the car.
We drove off with the only sound was the crunch of the cookies being chewed and the smooth run of the wheels on the asphalt road. The cookies were really nice, with not much sweets, just how I would like them to be that I ended up eating them more with gusto. I turned and looked out the window at the landscapes of our neighbourhood, as the wind fanned my face. The unnecessary and questioning nervousness I had bottling inside eased to a minimum, but the unsettling feeling at the whole matter remained.
