The Cure Among Us

Chapter 2

I was out of breath from running. I finally reached the woods.

"I can take the woods straight to mom's work and hopefully she's there." I muttered to myself.

As soon as I walked outside of my house it was chaos. The neighborhood was on fire, cars where smashed and upside down, bodies lay lifeless on the lawns of their houses. I was not going to risk walking out in the open so I took the woods. I know them like the back of my hand.

The sun was off to the west its probably about 2-3 I need to hurry before it gets dark. I finally reached where I needed be. The smallest building out of all of them, painted pink and with a sign saying, 'Sunshine's Floral Shop'. My mom's job. I looked inside the wide window but found nobody and the lights were off. I tried to open the door but it didn't budge.

"Of course it would be locked." I whispered to myself.

There was one of those people eaters far in the distance. 'I need to hurry before I become their next meal.' So I went around back and slowly pushed the door open. It was so much darker outside I could just make out everything. But I was shocked because everything was everywhere the vases of flowers were strewn across the floor and there was glass everywhere.

"Mom?" I called out quietly. No answer. Then I heard something moving around in the back. I grabbed a vase and headed towards the noise. "Who's there?" My heart was beating so fast that I was going deaf from it.

I came to were the sound came from and found nobody and then before I could turn around something was pointing at the back of my head.

"Don't you move or I'll blow your head off." It sounded like a woman.

"P-Please don't shoot me." I stuttered.

"Who are you? And have you been bitten?" Bitten? "My name's Athena and no I have not been bitten?" I was so scared that this woman was going to shoot me.

"Turn around, I need to make sure." I turn around to find the gun still pointed at me but lowered. She starts looking all over lifting my shirt and my pant legs up. "Alright you're clear. What are you doing in here?" She asked.

"This is my mom's shop. I came looking for her but she's evidently not here."

She reaches into her jacket pocket and pulls out a walkie talkie. "Hey, I found a girl her name is Athena she says that she was looking for her mom." On the other side a man responds, "Where's your location, Corrina?"

"I'm in a floral shop-"

I stepped in, " Sunshine's, miss if it helps." She raised a brow as if I wasn't suppose to speak. "The girl says the name of the shop is 'Sunshine's floral shop'." There was silence and then the man spoke again,"Sunshine? Sunshine Kendrick?" My eyes went wide, the woman named Corrina looked towards me and had a questioning look. "Well?"

"Yeah that's my mom."

"She said yes."

"Bring her back. She's very important." He says. She looks me up and down, "She doesn't look too important." She grins wickedly. Oh geez thanks that makes me feel a lot better.

"Just bring her to me!" He exclaims. Her face falls as soon as he said that. "Sorry sir, I'll be their as soon as possible." She let out a grunt and turned back to me. "Alright, Athena is it..? I shook my head, "You stay by my side if I tell you to do something I would do it but by all means if you don't want to listen then you won't make it very far by yourself."

"Umm alright but first can I get a few things?"

"Yeah sure, you have five minutes." She turned around and went to the window to look out.

I went behind the counter and opened the little fridge my mom always kept for me whenever I got hungry. I grabbed two water bottles and a hand full of granola bars.

I glanced over and found the picture of a woman and a teenage girl standing next to each other with large smiles on their faces. My mother has always been beautiful with her sleek brown hair and hazel eyes, me on the other hand I have coffee colored skin and chocolate brown eyes with my curly hair. "Its time to go." I was pulled out of my thoughts and back to reality. I put the picture in my backpack and walked around the front of the counter and towards Corrina. "Ready?" All I did was shake my head and she opened the door to the world of chaos.
