You lower your hat over your hair, staring down at the dead body on the floor.

It stares back up at you, it's eyes screaming for justice, it's mouth open as if still calling for help. Their arms outstretched in your direction as if they want you to save them.

Your second in command detective stands next to you, their long dark jacket almost grazing the blood pooled across the ground.

"You'll find who did it. You always do." He smiles at you, patting your back.

You're stoic, emotionless. He takes a step back as he sees the expression on your face.

"I know I do." You say, patting him on the back in return.

You look at his face, your lover. The man you've spent so much time with, fell in love with. The man you saw a future with.

"Arrest him." You say to the police around you. "He's the murderer."

"No." He looks at you in betrayal.

"Your fingerprints were found on the knife. How do you explain that?"

But you don't let him answer, as the police put handcuffs on his hands, as he's taken inside the police car.

The rain pours down on your face as you climb back into your own car, driving home.

You see traces of him everywhere, the man you thought would be your forever. His hair on the bedroom pillows, his lip marks on your wine glasses, his fingerprints on your knives.

People really ought to be more careful of who they trust, you think.

You pour a glass of red wine into your glass. Taking a sip. As you recline on your sofa, putting your heels up on the table, you tap your pillow lightly with your nails.

You miss him a bit, but someone had to take the fall.

You smile.

Everyone had always told you you were good at your job.
