She was named after her mother's favorite season- her name held colorful trees, leaves imprinted in journals, and chilly weather that prompted sweaters that fell past your waist and sleeves that encased your hands. All of these things reminded Autumn of her mom- her mom whom was no longer with her.

When Autumn was 10, her mother passed away in a car wreck. She was then sent to live with her dad in Connecticut, miles from her previous home in Boston, as her parents had divorced when she was young. She lived with her emotionally unavailable dad who worked around the clock, her alcoholic stepmother, and her step brother Kevin- a 21 year old college dropout who was working a part time job as a custodian at her dads bank. When she was twelve, she was taken away from the home for reasons many people don't know, and was sent to live with her aunt and cousins- which was the best thing for her. She had a boyfriend named Alex at her new school. She was happy there, and her aunt and uncle were good to her.

This year, she would be turning 15. Her one wish for her birthday was to go to an event-  anything- concert, a convention, a festival- she didn't care, she just wanted to leave. Today was the day she was going to ask.

"Aunt Louise?" Autumn said at the dinner table, talking over the clacking of her little cousins' plastic toddler fork.

"Yes dear?" Louise responded.

"For my birthday- which is February 18th- I really want to do something cool, like a concert, or something," Autumn mumbled. Louise stopped and thought for a moment.

"What concert exactly?" She asked.

"Well, actually, I kind of want to go to a hotel in New Jersey- I really want to walk the Atlantic City boardwalk," Louise cut her off.

"Like a vacation?" She asked.

"Yeah- and Alex could drive me," autumn said.

"Well, I don't know- let me talk about it with bob and see if we can make it work- that's a great idea, it's just money is tight," Louise said, smiling hopefully. She knew she would find a way to make it happen though. She would find a way to do something special for Autumn, because she knew a week after autumns birthday, she'd be doing something very difficult for her. Something they just didn't talk about.

Louise never expected having to take in Autumn- and she never expected her sister dying in a car crash either. Her sister was only 41, and she was 43. Her kids were a toddler named lexis, and a 12 year old boy named Evan. She never wanted another kid, but after hearing what Autumn had been through, she knew it was the right thing to do. She had to set aside her persisting postpartum depression and be there for her niece.

After talking with her uncle bob, they all they that, although it was tight, they could afford to go. Something about being able to go someplace new and exciting was so important to her- and for the first time in a while, she felt really excited about something.
