Chapter Three
Mr Martinez's POV
The heat's getting to me. It had only been the first two lessons of the day, but I'm feeling it. I have been enjoying myself though. I'd initially thought that this job was going to be downright rubbish, but the students in my English group gave me hope. One student in particular shone brighter even though she tried to hide it (she was also the one, I noticed, that I saw in the hall earlier!). What I'd read in her notebook was mind blowing, so emotional, deep and full of horrific and beautiful things. I just had to tell her.
Her anger made me laugh to myself all through period two. I could tell she was seething, she obviously didn't like April. Now I don't want to seem like a bad teacher, but I don't either. She's inappropriate, loud and generally rude. Then again, aren't most teenagers?
Second period was coming to an end and I found that the day could actually go well. I just have to get used to being stared at by all the girls and glared at by the boys. Hopefully, soon everyone will have an understanding of where they stand, and we can all settle down and be friends (well, as good as friend between a teacher and his students could be).
The bell for break went and I dismissed the class, eager for a drink to cool me down. Grace caught my eye as she struggled behind the stampede of students. She was alone which confused me. I watched as she walked from the room by herself, no friends? I dismissed it and headed to the vending machines that I'd found yesterday. I'd not eaten this morning, being in a rush to get to work and all, just to find that hardly anyone was there. Well, early bird gets the worm, they say. I bought a cranberry Drench and a Kit Kat, and then made my way to the nearest exit. I didn't want to spend my time with some babbling teachers in a stuffy staff room. The sun was shining down on me and made me optimistic for the rest of the day ahead. There's some benches next to the grass that sit under the shade so I perched myself there, the cool shade provided me with protection from the beaming sun. I opened the Drench chugging it down and nearly drinking all of it at once. Putting the bottle and chocolate bar on the table, I realised I still had Grace's notebook in my hand so I began to read it. I was mesmerised by the words, beautifully sculpted onto the paper, which meant I wasn't prepared for the wrath that rained down on me.
"Give that back!" she shrieked.
I jumped out of my seat and backed up carrying the notebook in my hand. To say I was shocked was an understatement. The girl just near on attacked me, lunging out of nowhere.
"Look I know you're a teacher, but that is my property and you should not be reading that. It is private! So, give it back." She was trying to control her anger, but it was very apparent that she was fuming.
I smiled which seemed to anger her more as she stepped closer to me, going for her book. I held it above my head and taunted her (I probably shouldn't have, but it was funny). "You will get this back at the end of the day. And besides...I already read it." This sent her over the edge. She was going berserk, thrashing her arms around and throwing curses at me. I stopped her "I said you will collect it at the end of the day. You will have to pick it up then anyway seen as you have detention in my room, congratulations." I said with a smile.
"You can't do that."She pleaded.
"I can and I will. No student of mine will think they can physically attack someone and not face the consequences." I had to try and fight the smile that was screaming to show itself.
Her head drops in defeat, so I told her to sit down and she did. When I sat down she looked up, and I almost gave her the book back.
"There's some great stuff in here. Why hide it?" she didn't reply. The silence between us grew awkward, so I tried to break it. "Kit Kat?" I offered.
