CHAPTER FOUR

It’s been fifteen days since the lawyer started working dad’s case. He said the case was complicated and could take a long time.
How did things turn out miserable this fast? I was happy one moment and the next, I am at the peak of sadness. I have always tried to understand how life works but ended up broken and sad. I can’t hold any of this anymore, I’d rather die.

////////////////////
As always, I’m attending my class but I can’t concentrate at all.  I decided to pretend that I am not feeling well so that they’d let me go home.

I went to the school clinic and told Mrs Martha that I’m sick, and for my luck, she gave me the exit card. Then I headed back home by myself. When I arrived, my phone was ringing ; it was from an unknown number. I somehow hesitated to answer but finally did.

“Hello” I said.

“My love Tenny, this is your father.”

“Dad? Is that you?” I said confused.

“Yes dear. I’m calling because I don’t think I’d ever get to see you again and I want you to know that I love you and… and…” I could barely hear what he was saying because the connection was bad.

“I’m the one who loves you more but wait why are you saying these things? You will be free very soon daddy I promise.”

“I know that and I also believe in you but there isn’t much we can do about it. Even if the court decides to let me free, the prisoners will surely kill me.
Anyways, I called to tell you no matter how you struggle and get knocked down in life, don’t quit okay honey? Just remember that you always put your will first. Not others okay? I wish this wasn’t the way I leave you but fate has it’s own way of controlling things so don’t be sad sweetie. Bye I love you forever.”

“ Wait, wait daddy I need you. Where are you going? I am not ready to be left alone daddy… Hello? Hello dad are you there? Dad, can you hear me?” I said sobbing.

All I can see is a glimmer of light coming from the blue curtain of my room. It seems like the earth is spinning around me. My mind can’t process the thing that happened a few seconds before. I have to call mom and tell her to buy me a plane ticket to New York.

“Pick up your phone.” I said rushing.
“Hello Tenny.”

“Mom, hurry up and send me some money for a flight to New York. Dad is in trouble.”

“Whoa calm down. What happened?”

“I don’t have time to explain please it’s very urgent.”

“Okay, I’m going to send it in a minute.”

“Thanks mom.”

Mason once told me his father works at the airport so maybe if I call him, I don’t have to wait for the queue.
“Hello Mason. Where are you? Could you please do me a favor?”

“Home. What is it? I told you I got your back at any time.” Mason said with his kind voice.

“I can’t talk about it now but you told me your father works in the airport yeah?”

“Yes he still works there.”

“I was wondering if he could help me get a ticket to New York quickly. I’m in a rush that’s why I can’t wait.”

“Okay sure, but I’ll also come with you because it’s not safe for you to go to a place you don’t know all by yourself. Even though I don’t know the case you’re going for.”

“So is this our deal?”

“Yeah"

“Okay then I am at the airport. Don’t be late.”

“On my way.”

Not long, I see Mason pulling his car over and I waved so that he could see me. A few seconds later, he was standing beside me staring at me. I don’t know why he was looking at me like that, it’s probably because of how messy my hair was and how ridiculous I looked with my home clothes.

“Hey Ten, are your okay?” Mason said .

“Let’s get moving and I’ll tell you when I can. Is everything ready?”

“Yeah sure this way.” Said mason Pointing to the entrance door.

We were on the plane, silence occupying the gaps between us. He didn’t ask me anything about why I had to go in such a rush. But I believe it’s because he was sure I wouldn’t spit a word even if he confronted me so hard.  Why did he wanna come with me? That’s another question but for now, all I want to know is how my dad is doing.

We finally arrived. Now we had to go to the prison. Mason stopped a taxi and we headed there. I was really tensed by the silence between us so I decided to break it.
“I’m really thankful you offered to come with me.” I said, tilting my head.
“Pfttt don’t make it a big deal.” Mason said. Trying not to look at me.
“It is for me.”
The taxi was pulling over at our destination by then.
“Get out of the car. Or are you going to stay here?” Mason said, mockingly.
“Okay” I replied, rolling my eyes.

When I regained consciousness, everything around me looked dark until the fluorescent lights hanging from the ceiling started to look blinding. Nothing smelled familiar either, except the scent of alcohol in the hospital. Yeah I know you’re asking yourself why I am in the hospital and you guessed right; I fainted.

The last thing I remember is the police officer explaining how my father was murdered in a horrible manner. That’s probably when I passed out.

So here I am, a seventeen year old, lonley and heartbroken, with no idea what to do next.
