Plastic and how I made my Change
In the last part, I described how plastic can cause us problems and what we could do to change some of that. So now I want to let you know how I changed some things in my life to get it done.
First of all, always start with an uncomplicated and small thing. Change comes slowly, and it needs time for us to get used to it.
I began with changing first the things I come in contact with daily.
My toothbrushes are now of bamboo wood. Of course, any regrowing material is suitable for this item since it gets replaced by us often. I had to get used to the new sensation in the mouth, but I am rather happy that I got no questionable substances anymore in my mouth. The teeth brush was just my beginning in the bath. As soon I was out of schampoo I got myself a schampoo and conditioner bar. It's was a little strange to not just have a plastic bottle for my schampoo anymore, but it didn't take long to get used to this soap like piece instead. With this the bathroom slowly contained less plastic.
Plastic isn't always wrong to use. As long we can reuse it, and there are no critical substances mixed in, we can use it without any worries, so don't worry if you still got maybe some things with plastic that you could actually still reuse.
That's also why I got myself an ear cleaner made from silicone, its reusable. It's not that big of a change but using a reusable ear cleaner makes it a lot easier to not excessively produce trash. Also it's a lot better for saving money.I have also changed my drinking bottle I take with me to work. It's made of glass now and to keep it save I sew myself a protection bag for it. There where many expensive bottles that could also be reused in the same way made of metal, but I just went with this simple glass bottle since I am also a little bit stingy when it comes to money. So when I go out or to work I usually fill up my bottle at home instead of always buying myself a new plastic bottle of something to drink outside.
With time I also went more frequently to the no packaging stores. It's still sort of expensive to buy everything from there, but I still try to get most of my things not packed in plastic and if I don't necessarily need something I think twice about buying it. Like that my kitchen slowly but surely got more and more glass containers than plastic ones. Since there is a return system with certain glass containers it get a little cramped somethimes. But it's still making me feel better when the trashcan is less full instead. Besides that I also try to reuse all the plastic bags I got from long ago. Even if I started to reduce the plastic I still got a lot from before that I don't want to throw out without purpose so it takes time to use it all until it is unusable.
Besides all the things you could change it is crucial to find out your consumption of things and how much you buy. Of course, people want to buy new things but maybe think twice if you want it to be of plastic or not.
I also still purchase items primarily since many things break. Electronics often got plastic parts we don't see, but we often have to replace them, so there is more plastic trash again. I began to replace broken electronic devices with mechanical machines since those can easily be fixed and don't become trash that easily. Additionally it's not like we need all those machines with only one purpose so some aren't even of much of a use to us.
Also, don't forget to separate the trash, this makes a big difference. It is a lot more work, and I must say I also find it tiring ripping up things. Some stuff got plastic attached to other material, but I still separate it to reduce the chance of the plastic ending up in our nature.
Plastic is ok, as a long-lasting way to use something, but if it is repeatedly used and cast away, I recommend finding another item with different material for it.
We live in a throwaway society, but we need to understand that the things we throw away still got worth in the material they contain and that some things don't end up where we think they will. We throw away with it our hard-earned money and maybe even our environment's health.
