you were a perfectionist. sure, some people might've seen it as a flaw, but some might say it was an honorable trait of yours. it's why you were so good in what you did, your notes taken in school were always the neatest, and your posture was always the straightest in ballet class. it was basically the reason for all your success.
which is why it bothered you especially when some messy, teenage boy swooped in and got everything right. he got all the good grades, amazing internships, and friends who actually cared.
you were in math class when your quizzes from last week were getting passed out. "okay, everyone," your teacher started, "honestly i expected better from everyone considering we spent extra time going over this lesson, and the question were reviewed countless times just in class. let alone if you actually studied." she sighed.
you rolled your eyes. every single teacher gave the same speech whether the grades were good or not. but you weren't worried you knew you had this quiz aced, you'd stayed up all night studying.
"but there was one grade i was actually proud of," she started off again. you straightened in your seat, ready for your name to be called out. but she turned, "peter, great job. highest mark out of all my classes." peter just smiled politely in his seat. that was before he turned to you with a cocky look on his face. oh, how bad you just wanted to smack it right off.
you were shocked. okay, maybe it wasn't that bad, maybe you were just a few points below him and you could handle that. you could handle his endless teasing because you had more important things going on.
your teacher started around the classroom, sharing something with each student whose desk she laid a paper upon. and when she came to you, you could already tell by the look on her face that this was not good.
"y/n, i expected better from you," she told you, handing you your paper and giving you a disappointed look.
it took you a second to catch your breath when you looked at the paper. seventy-five. you couldn't remember the last time you'd gotten a seventy-five on a test. hell, you'd never gotten a seventy-five on anything.
the shock must've shown on your face pretty clearly cause your friend in the seat beside you took one look at you and asked, "hey, you okay ?"
even peter saw how your face paled and got a worried look. not that he even cared, or you even noticed.
it didn't help that your friend (who you knew was too busy out partying to get any studying done) had gotten a higher mark than you. they just shrugged saying, "honestly it doesn't even matter. maybe this lesson just wasn't your strong point. plus it is just one quiz."
sure, just one quiz today. but what about tomorrow's test in biology. or next week's project in chemistry. maybe you had done your best and it was only downhill from here. maybe you just weren't as smart as everyone made you out to be, as you made yourself out to be. maybe, one of the only things you thought you were actually good at, you just weren't.
your breathing started getting heavier and quicker. so as soon as the bell rang you rushed up to your teacher's desk, holding your graded paper in hand. "hey excuse me, ma'am, i was just wondering is there any way that this is the wrong paper ?"
