quiet talk

jughead's bed was made for one person only, and he realized it more than ever when he tried to sleep in it at the same time as archie. he had to repeatedly save himself from falling on the floor, and that made it impossible for him to fall asleep.

he had been trying for hours, but it's good that he didn't fall asleep, because then he remembered. toni. he looked at his phone, it was already 4 am. "fuck," he says. "fuck!" he yells this time and gets out of bed.

he hears archie moan and realized he had to be quiet so he wouldn't wake him up. he puts on a warmer sweater, and before he leaves the room he looks at archie for a few seconds. "i'll be back soon," he whispers, even if he knows archie is sleeping and won't hear him.

he closes the door carefully and then he walks downstairs. he grabs his backpack and is about to leave, but he changes his mind. he can't just leave archie there. he's drunk, what if he wakes up and jughead isn't there. what if his dad decided to show up? it wouldn't be impossable.

on the other hand, he can't just be an asshole and not show up tonight, even if he's already really late. he decides to leave a note, and be back as early as he can.

he takes up his notebook from the backpack and the pencil, and starts writing.

'hi, arch

if you just woke up and wonders where i am, don't worry i'll be back soon. there's something i really need to do, i'll explain when i come back. if my dad comes home, just be quiet as fuck and don't leave my room.

/jug'

he rips off the paper and walks upstairs with it. he enters his room and lays the note on the side table. then he walks downstairs again, grabs his backpack, and leaves.

while he's walking to sweetwater river he picks up his phone and calls toni. she doesn't answer, and jughead prays that she's not pissed off.

when he arrives at sweetwater river, he can't see, nor hear anything. but when he to towards the dark blu bench to sit down, he sees toni sitting there. he exhales deeply. "hi, sorry i'm late," he says and walks up to her.

"you should be happy i'm still here and waited so long," she says, and jughead sits down beside her.

"i am," he says. "it feels so weird to sit here with you, the last two years of my life i've been sitting here alone," he then says and looks at toni with a smile.

she smiles back "wait, you still kept going here?" she asks.

"yeah," he says, and toni nods.

"you got a cigarette?" she asks and jughead shakes his head. "stop it, i know you do, you've been smoking since we were like twelve, just give me one,"

"fine," he takes out his package of cigarettes from his backpack and takes out two cigarettes. he gives one to toni and puts the other in his mouth. he also takes up his lighter and lights the cigarette. he takes a deep breath, then he lightens toni's too. "feels good to be sitting here and smoke a cigarette with you again," he says.

"i know right, we need to start doing this again," she says.

jughead and toni don't talk much, just a little bit of small talk, but it's enough. none of them really like to have long conversations, they'd rather just sit there knowing the other person is next to them.
