"Tanko? Your face is covered in soot. Come over here." Tanko's mother wipes off the soot from her face. "Its so out here so you don't have to go." "I want everyone to eat their fill on New Years, so I'm gonna sell as much charcoal as I can." "Thank you."

"Big sister! Your going into town again today?" "I'm going with you!" "Oh no your not. You can't walk fast like Tanko." "Mom!" "You can't. Since she can't use the cart today she wont be able to give you a ride when you're tired." "Big sis!" "I wanna go with you! I promise I'll help you!" "Thank you Hanako, but you're staying home today. You too Shigeru, but I'll get you lots of goodies, okay?" "Really?" "Yeah. And Hanako, I'll read for you when I'm back." "Okay." "That's a good girl."

"I'm heading out now. Takeo, will you chop as much wood as you can?" "Sure I'll do it but...I was hoping we could do it together." "There, there." Tanko began rubbing his head and ruffling his hair in a sweet, playful manner. "Hey stop that." 

"Hurry back, okay?" "Be safe, okay?" 

"Big sister!" "Hey Nezuo." "I was putting Rokuta for a nap so he wouldn't make a fuss when you left. He misses dad a lot after he passed away. See you later!"

"Oh my Tanko-chan, I can't believe you came down from the mountain on a day like this. You're such a hard worker. You'll catch a cold." "I'll be fine. Do you have enough charcoal?" "Hey Tanko-chan, I could use some charcoal." 

(A/N: just know I will be switching up quite a few things in this book to make it more interesting ;)

"Ah, Tanko-chan, great timing! Can you sniff this plate for me? This lady thinks I broke it but it wasn't me!" "I smell a cat." "So it was a cat huh?" "See! I told you I didn't break it!" "Hey Tanko, you think you could help me with this luggage?" 

"Hey Tanko-chan, c'mere a second." "Coming." "Tanko-chan, are you seeing anyone right now?" Tanko's face lights up bright red. "N-No." "Wonderful, (random name), come out here." A boy around Tanko's age walks out. "Would you be interested in marrying my son?" "N-no thank you ma'am. I'd want to marry someone that I have strong feelings for. I'm sorry." "No, No its perfectly fine. You're such an honest, young lady. Let me know if you ever change your mind. You're going to need a man to protect you, so try not to take too long deciding." Tanko sighed deeply, pained by what she said. "Yes ma'am."

Tanko sold all the coal and began to head back home. "Oi Tanko! Are you heading back up the mountain? You shouldn't, its too dangerous." "I have a great sense of smell so I'll be fine." "I'll put you up for the night. Come on, get back here." "But-..." "Don't argue! Come on! Before the demons show up." 

Tanko goes inside and he makes dinner for her and she eats. "Thank you for the meal. Hey Granddad Saburo, what are demons like?" "Man eating demons have always prowled the land once it gets dark. That's why you should never stroll around at night. If you're done eating, go to bed. You can set off for home at first light." "These demons wouldn't come inside your house, would they?" "Yes, they'd come in." "Then, everyone would get eaten up by the demons." "That's why the demon hunters protect us by slaying them since way back when. Lights out now. Go to sleep." 

'He's so lonely since he lost his whole family...I'll have to bring my siblings over next time.'
