In all of their excitement for their trip, the Jacks did not notice anything strange happening in their house as they were packing. They did not notice the door to the basement was never closed even though no one ever went in there, they did not notice the new whistle in the house during the night, they did not even notice the security system in their house had suddenly stopped working. Well, almost no one realized it.
Clare Jacks had just turned 11, but she still had the imagination to fill libraries full of amazing books. Clare noticed everything that the rest of her family ignored, she even noticed how the floor creaked more than usual, the light in the basement was out even though they never used it (because of course, she checked out the open door), and how the temperature in the house began to slowly drop.
The Jacks left for their vacation on a Friday, not realizing that their house was slowly becoming home to more than just their family.
It all started with Sammy the ghost, not a very scary name for a not so scary ghost. Sammy knew that the family was going away and thought that their house would be the perfect place to hide from the evil spirits, the spirits wanted to hunt Sammy down for his soal. The three-floor house with a basement and attic would be big enough and no one would even be home to draw attention to the ghost.
Sammy was very wrong, in fact, it did not take long at all for the spirits to find him. Sammy moved into the house a week before they left for their trip to France. One day after the auction that gave the family their trip. Sammy lived in their basement before they left so that he would not be noticed, although he could not hide the whistle which every house with a ghost develops not long after they move in. Most helpful to not being discovered was disabling the family's security system, which he knew as his father was a technician in his living life.
Sammy had two days of peace before he was discovered, not by the spirits, but by a small girl. She looked to be around ten or eleven years old, she had wavey strawberry blond hair, fair skin, and bright blue eyes, she looked almost the opposite of how Sammy looked in his living days he had curly brown hair, brown skin, and brown eyes. Sammy could immediately tell that this girl was kind and would not hurt him by the soft look in her eyes, but he also knew that this girl without knowing it could lead the spirits straight to Sammy.
