Sleeping Rosie

Rosie was walking down the crowded marketplace streets of Aruzic. She had on a plain cloak, plain shoes, plain everything. But even though her clothes were plain, you couldn't find anyone in all of Europe who was more beautiful. And Rosie hated that.

She was very popular with the boys. Unfortunately.

It wasn't that Rosie didn't like boys. She did. Just... Not like that. At least, none that she had met. But that hadn't stopped the suitors from pursuing her day after day. And today was one of those days.

"Hey, Rosie!" she heard from behind her.

Rosie sighed. Aidan. One of her more persistent suitors that, if he would just stop trying to court her, she could be good friends with. Unfortunately, that wasn't likely to happen soon.

"Rosie!" Aidan yelled again, running after her. "Wait up! Miss Rosie! Please! Wait!"

Rosie rolled her eyes and turned around, a smile on her face. "Hello, Aidan," she said tiredly. "How are you?"

"Fine, just fine, Miss Rosie," Aidan replied. "And you, miss?"

"Wonderful, thank you," Rosie said politely. "Now Aidan, is there something you wanted to tell me?"

Aidan's eyes widened. "Yes miss!" he said. "How did you know?"

"Lucky guess, from the way you came bounding up the street yelling my name," Rosie said dryly.

"Of course miss," Aidan said seriously.

Rosie sighed inwardly. Some people just didn't understand dry wit.

"Well?" she prompted after a pause.

"Oh, right!" Aidan cried, bringing a rose out from behind his back and offering it to her. "Here you are miss. I saw it in my mother's garden this morning and I thought of you right away. And so I asked my mother, 'Ma, this reminds me of a girl I know.' She said, 'Oh, that Rosie you're sweet on?' and I said 'Yes ma'am. May I pick it and bring it to her?' and she said 'Of course son. But remember, when you give it to her, take care not to ramble on and on. Got that, boy?' and I said 'Yes ma'am!' and so here you are Miss Rosie, a rose just for you!"

Rosie had stopped paying attention to Aidan's rambling a few words in, and so it took her a few moments to realize that he had stopped.

"Oh, thank you very much Aidan," Rosie said politely, taking the rose.

"You're welcome miss!" replied Aidan proudly.

"Do you happen to know the time?" Rosie asked innocently.

"It's ten minutes of one, miss." Aiden answered promptly.

"Oh!" Rosie cried, sounding surprised. "Already? Oh, I must meet my aunts in five minutes! Well, I guess time flies when you're with friends. I have to go, Aidan. And thank you again for the rose!"

"You're welcome!" Aidan yelled after her as she ran towards her aunts' booth.
