The school day had just ended and, as per usual, Lance made his way to the cornfields near the outskirts of his town. He sat down and waited. He did this almost every day, as he didn't have a lot of friends and the friends he did have weren't that close to him to actually get to know him and to bond with him. Not that he minded, he was fine on his own. He had his family and his drawing utensils and that was all he needed. Well, almost everything that is.
Lance grabbed the paper out of his bag, chose the sharpest pencil and started drawing. He didn't let a lot of people look at these drawings, not that he was insecure about them, it's just that most of them were private.
He was almost done with his third drawing when the sun was about to set. He heard movement in the cornfields behind him, something most people would find at least a little unnerving. Yet, Lance didn't move a muscle.
"Hey, buddy! I was just working on a new sketch of you, hope you like it." No answer came, yet Lance knew his company had heard him. He felt something damp touch his neck and shoulder and he put his sketchbook up a little higher. An approving 'ruff' sounded from behind him and he chuckled, "Thanks, bud. I am glad you like it". The damp feeling returned and a little whine followed shortly after, when Lance lowered his sketchbook once again to carry on drawing. He sighed. "Do I have to tell you? It's just the same old story. Got called some names, my friends ditched me to smoke underneath Old Solomon's Tree and he, like normal, didn't notice me whatsoever. At least, I don't think he did." A disapproving and sad growl sounded. "It's okay, buddy. I mean, even if he did notice me, he would never fall for someone like me. He is the top of the bill and some people still ask me if I am the new student. I have been going there for four years, bud, four years! He is like this handsome, brown-haired deity with strikingly dark, muddy eyes. And, then there is me." The wolf whined and Lance continued, "But, I have my parents, I have you and I have my pencils. That's all I need. I feel perfectly fine sitting here with you every night, you are like my own personal guardian wolf. Not a single wolf has being sighted in Waverton in at least one hundred and fifty years. And, here you are, that's what makes all of this worth the while, buddy. I love you; I just wish he would love me too. Like you do". No sound came and when Lance looked back, he didn't see the black nose anywhere.
He looked up and saw the moon starting to take the sun's place, "You're right, bud, it's time to go home. I will see you again tomorrow evening, okay?" Lance grabbed his bag and stood up, the latest addition to his collection of wolf drawings falling out.
The second he turned his back towards the cornfields and his figure left the moonlight, a certain brown haired, muddy-eyed guy appeared from where the wolf had just been, paper in hand, "I love you too, Lance. I wish I would have the guts to tell you. And someday I will. I just don't want to hurt you; I don't know what could happen as I know what I am capable of".
And soon the moonlight was illuminating the empty cornfields of Waverton once more.
