Chapter 3

The next day...

Riker POV

"Rocky! Shhh! You're going to wake him up!"

I opened my eyes and looked over to see Rydel and Rocky sitting on Rocky's bed.

"What's going on?" I asked, rubbing my eyes.

"Well... There's a few more people who tested positive for the virus in California," Rocky said.

"No!"

"Riker, relax. Mom and dad thought of a really good idea," Rydel said, getting up and sitting next to me.

"What?"

"They said maybe we should go to the cabin in Colorado. There are barely any people around in the mountains, so it would probably be safer," Rydel said, rubbing circles into my back.

"Ok. Yeah. I think I would feel better there."

"Ok. Then mom said we can leave tomorrow. So pack."

"How long are we going to be there?"

"I don't know. Maybe a long time if more people keep getting sick. So pack for a while. And dad said bring your bass so you guys can work on songs."

"Ok. I will."

Later...

Riker POV

I packed a bunch of shirts and sweatpants and hoodies because I wanted to be comfy while we were at the cabin. And it's usually cold there since it's in the mountains. I packed my converse and some boots if it's snowy there and my winter coat.

I also packed my bass, some picks, and my song writing notebook. My brothers packed their guitars and Rydel packed her keyboard. We put everything in the van so that we're ready to leave tomorrow.

I'm just scared we're going to catch the virus on the way to our cabin. We usually stop and get food and bathroom breaks when we drive to our cabin.

"Has your doctor called you back yet?" Rydel asked, sitting down next to me on the couch.

"No. He said it would take a long time because they're doing a ton of tests."

"You better hope he calls you before we leave tomorrow because we don't have cell service there."

"Oh, you're right... I kind of don't think he's going to call before then though."

"Did he have any idea what was wrong with you?"

"No. He just said my numbers were really messed up in my bloodwork."

"That's so weird. You've always been fine at your checkups."

"I know. I don't know what's wrong. I feel fine."

"Well hopefully it's nothing serious."

"I hope so, but he said the virus could be deadly, so I kind of think it's going to be something serious."

"Well we'll just have to wait and see. We leave at 4:00 in the morning tomorrow just so you know. Because it takes a lot of hours to get there."

"Ok. I'll probably just sleep in the car."

Later...

Riker POV

I'm super paranoid about our drive tomorrow. I haven't drank anything in hours because I don't want to go into any rest stops and get the virus. I don't want to eat any fast food. I want nothing to do with the outside world.

I know we have masks and gloves and hand sanitizer, but I'm still scared I'm going to get it somehow.

I can't even sleep because I'm so paranoid about it. It's like a 16 hour drive and I don't know how many times we're going to stop along the way. I don't even know what's wrong with me yet because my doctor hasn't called me back, and I'm not even going to be able to get his call when I'm at the cabin because there's no cell service. So how am I ever going to find out what's wrong with me? And what if he needs to do more testing? I won't be able to because I'll be in the mountains in Colorado.

My chest feels so tight because I'm so anxious.

I turned over on my side and saw Rocky fast asleep in his bed. I just wish I could get to sleep.

I'm so freaking thirsty too. My mouth is literally dry. I know this isn't healthy to not drink anything but I really don't want to go into gas station bathrooms. They're disgusting and who knows how many germs are in them?

I got out of bed and went downstairs because I'm too thirsty. I'm having a hard enough time falling asleep because I'm anxious. And being super thirsty is only making it worse.

I decided to get a glass of milk. I sat down on the couch in the living room to drink it. It's about 2:30 in the morning, so we have about 1 and a half hours until we leave.

I finished my milk and then laid down on the couch and closed my eyes.
