All day at the apartment , Adalie had warred with herself.
She’d promised never to seek out Luca . She’d sworn to leave behind his world and all the troubles that came with it. The questions remained: Did she owe it to him to keep that promise? Did she owe him her loyalty? Or was it more about honor?

Honor had not done Adalie much in the way of favors. An honorable young woman would not have fled BlackBerry after Sleeping with her very married music teacher .

Adalie inhaled warm spices, and melting butter. Every Friday morning Priscilla baked cookies . She sits up. Make a show of swinging her legs to the floor beside her bed, the velvet drapes swaying around her. Then she places her open book beside the bedside table

When Adalie stepped into the kitchen Priscilla was busy whisking something in a bowl , the sleeve of her French linen dress fluttering with the movement. “Something came for you Lia. it's on the table ” she said when she noticed Adalie dwelling

On the table’s damasked center was a beautiful bouquet of hothouse roses, their petals like crimson velvet, their scent reminding Adalie of a famous parfumerie on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. With A note reading

- The Mayor of Onyx

A week ago she had received an invitation to attend the mayor of Onyx's engagement party , which of course surprised her , she didn't know the Woman or her fiance so it was most unexpected to be invited to attend their engagement party and to sing at the wedding for a large donation

Delight rippled through her .
“What ever will I wear ” Adalie muttered under her breath.

“I would like to know, do you feel better ? ” Priscilla Asked in a contemplative tone,
“I heard you hurling your guts out earlier this morning yet again .”
Adalie scowl deepened. “ I'm fine . I think it's that fish we had for dinner the other day ”
“The fish . . . But I feel fine ?” Priscilla said , her long brunette plait swaying like a pendulum as her eyes darted to all four corners of the apartment.

Adalie pursed her lips. “If you want me to ask what is troubling you, then simply say so. I don’t have the patience or the inclination to tease it out of you, Priscilla.” Her grin was tight. “I can't read your mind , after all.”
The way Priscilla peered down at her made Adalie want to disappear or lash out .
“Is it possible you may be pregnant ?” Priscilla demanded, her lovely accent turning high-pitched. Time freezes for a second
“No ” Adalie answered. With that she strode back to her room

Half an hour later Adalie stared at her reflection. Pondered on the pregnancy topic earlier this morning with Priscilla
Adalie was not alarmed to hear the question . Rather she expected it. It was time for her to answer for her most recent transgressions. but it was best to leave the conversation for another time
