Tony came home a little tipsy that night. He was a master at concealing it, but Pepper could tell, she could always tell when he wasn’t okay. Fortunately for Pepper, his impairment meant that he didn’t notice that she had been in his lab, or that she had an ingenious plan up her sleeve.

She put him to bed, ignoring his numerous advances. She had resolved to never sleep him when he was drunk, just on basic principal. But once he hit the mattress, he was out like a light.

When she got up in the morning, he was still asleep, and she knew it would probably be hours before he woke back up. So she took her time getting up and ready. She called Happy to tell him to take the day off, so he wouldn’t suspect anything. She also called herself a cab.

The car arrived at the front, and Pepper made her way downstairs, her heels clicking on the tile as she walked. When she got in the car, she told the man where she wanted to go.

“221 51st street, please.”

The man nodded and she was on her way to see Lillian. Her conscience kept telling her that maybe this wasn’t such a good idea, especially since Tony had no idea about it. But that little voice inside her was overridden by a much louder voice saying “I have to meet her!”

It wasn’t a very long drive to get there, maybe around 25 minutes or so. But it gave Pepper a while alone with her thoughts.

As they pulled up to the house, they saw a car parked in the driveway, a promising sight. She thanked the driver and paid him his due. She walked up to the door, her heart fluttering in her chest the entire time.

She took a deep breath, readying herself for the sure to be awkward moment ahead. She rang the doorbell. A few moments later, she heard footsteps behind the door, just before it swung open.

There stood Lillian, looking just like her father.

“Hello,” Pepper spoke up, after lingering a few seconds more than she should have. “I am Virginia Potts, CEO of Stark Industries. Are you Lillian Montgomery?”

A flash of recognition ran across her face, “Oh, yes, of course! Hello! I am Lillian.” She shook her hand vigorously. “Are you here about my letter?”

“As a matter of fact, I am.” She smiled sweetly

“Come in! Come in!” Lillian opened the door wide to let her inside. “Sorry, I wasn’t expecting anyone, let me just-” she quickly leapt over to her coffee table, clearing away some dishes.

“Oh, please, don’t trouble yourself. I apologize, I should have called first.”  Pepper called to her as she scurried over to the kitchen to dispose of the dirty dishes

She returned moments later, motioning Pepper over to the living room. “Here, have a seat, would you like me to take your coat?”

“Sure.” Pepper slid her coat off and handed it to her; she put it on a hanger and hung it up in the closet behind the door. “Thank you.”

“Would you like something to drink? Water, soda, tea?”

“I’m fine, thank you very much” she smiled as she sat down on the sofa. “I hoped I didn’t interrupt anything.”

“Oh, no no. Today is my day off; I was just about to start cleaning, actually. Sorry again about the mess.”

“No need to worry.” She reassured her.

Lily sat down on the chair opposite the sofa.

“Let me start off by saying how lovely it is to meet you Lillian.”
