"Give it back!"

"Make me."

Nine year old Kim Seokjin angrily reaches for his stick of tornado fries, which are currently being held above his head and out of his reach by the very smug girl before him. The perpetrator is none other than his childhood family friend, Moon Byulyi.

Their mothers had met and become close in the hospital's maternity ward back when they were born, with Seokjin arriving into the world just eighteen days before Byulyi. They had grown up together in practically the same household, from overnight sleepovers to being signed up for the same extracurriculars by their parents throughout the years. To those around them, there had never been a Seokjin without a Byulyi following close behind or vice versa. The two were practically inseparable.

Of course, that didn't mean that things were always peaceful.

"I bought that with my own money!" Seokjin puffs his cheeks out in irritation, frustrated that even on his tiptoes, he can't manage to take his street food snack back. It doesn't help that Byulyi has her free hand shoved in his face to further his struggle and prevent him from getting close enough. Being a late bloomer can be such a bitch. "Buy your own!"

"I just want a bite," Byulyi protests, making sure that she'd properly subdued the boy before taking a bite of the crispy fried potato at the top of the skewer. The street food is warm against her lips, which are cold from running around in the winter weather earlier. After swallowing, she finally handed the snack back to the other. "There. That wasn't so hard, was it?"

"You ate like half of it!" Seokjin complains in disbelief, pointing an indignant finger at her. "You're buying me another one after this!"

"No way, that's what you get for blowing out my birthday candles last week," Byulyi sticks her tongue out in retaliation, crossing her arms in a defensive stance. "You ruined my birthday wish! Now it won't come true."

"Birthday wishes aren't real," Seokjin argues, aggressively finishing what's left of his tornado fries and tossing the skewer into the nearby trash can. He shoves his hands into his coat pockets before the tips of his fingers get too cold and starts heading away from the food stalls. "C'mon, let's go before we miss the sunrise."

"They are too!" Byulyi stomps in protest at his earlier comment regarding birthday wishes, but nonetheless is quick to follow after the other, clinging to the bottom hem of Seokjin's jacket so as not to become separated from him as they navigate their way through the crowded street. "Wait for me!"

They aren't quite sure when it became a tradition, but ever since Seokjin could remember, their families had always attended their local sunrise festival with one another. It was a celebration held on the last day of every year, so couples and families alike could celebrate and watch the New Year's sunrise together.

Perhaps it was because their birthdays were both in the month of December, or simply the fact that they were young and this was the only time their parents would allow them to stay up for so long, but there was just something special about the sunrise festival to Seokjin. He couldn't quite explain it, but even at his tender age, he often found himself looking forward to this festival even more than his own birthday celebration earlier in the month.
