Maleficent POV
I turned and hugged Stephen tight and whispered my thanks. He hugged me back tightly. I felt something wet on my shoulder before I felt Stephen shudder. I looked up at him and saw he was trying to cry without my knowing. "I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry! What I did was so wrong and I'm so sorry!" He cried as he sunk to his knees still holding me. It felt like we were kids again when he was sick. He had had a terrible fever and had an upset stomach. He would cling to me and cry in pain for hours. I just whispered soothingly into his ear and held him tight. I then remembered a lullaby he sang to me when I got hurt once as a child.
[Song is slanted]
Loo-li, loo-li, loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay lai-lay
Loo-li, loo-li, loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay

Lay down your head and I'll sing you a lullaby
Back to the years of loo-li lai-lay
And I'll sing you to sleep and I'll sing you tomorrow
Bless you with love for the road that you go

May you sail fair to the far fields of fortune
With diamonds and pearls at your head and your feet
And may you need never to banish misfortune
May you find kindness in all that you meet

May there always be angels to watch over you
To guide you each step of the way
To guard you and keep you safe from all harm
Loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay

May you bring love and may you bring happiness
Be loved in return to the end of your days
Now fall off to sleep, I'm not meaning to keep you
I'll just sit for a while and sing loo-li, lai-lay

May there always be angels to watch over you
To guide you each step of the way
To guard you and keep you safe from all harm
Loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay
Loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay
(Loo-li, loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay)
(Loo-li, loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay)
(Loo-li, loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay)
(Loo-li, loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay)
(Loo-li, loo-li, loo-li, lai-lay)
Loo-li, lai-lay…
After I finished singing he had calmed down and was just smiling at me. "I didn't think you would remember that song… I'm glad you did though." He said as he stood and offered me his hand. I hesitated because his smile was a painful reminder of my 16th birthday all those years ago. His smile was so sweet and gentle I was afraid of what he might do. My hand shook as it went to meet his. He gently pulled me to my feet and hugged me again. I noticed something glittering on the other side of the room and recognized it as a dagger. I let go of Stephen and walked to the dagger, inspecting it without touching it.
I didn't want to find out it was iron by the burn if I touched it. Stephen must have noticed what I was staring at and walked over. "It's ok to hold it, it's made of silver." He informed me. I cautiously picked it up and inspected it more closely. The handle was shaped to wrap slightly around the hand of the person holding it. The handle was in the shape of wings like mine wrapping around the hand of its owner from the back of it. The detail of the wings were incredible. Each feather was distinct and some were even shaped from gold.
The blade seemed perfectly balanced and had gold designs engraved in it. They each looked so familiar to me almost like I have seen them before… then it hit me. The designs were flowers from the Moors. They were the most beautiful flowers from the Moors and… they were my favorite flowers. As I inspected each flower I noticed some had flecks of sapphire in them along with emeralds, rubies, and even diamond. I was in awe by it’s beauty and danger. "When I was crowned king the first thing I did was have that dagger made. As soon as it was finished I was going to give it to you, but the Moors looked so dark and the wall began to form." Stated Stephen. My head snapped to him in surprise.
"You...made this...for me?" I asked in shock. He nodded and showed me the back of the blade. He pointed under my favorite flower out of all these, the only one that had a slight pink tint to it and was the shape of a rose, under it in melted amethyst read… Maleficent. "I felt horrible for cutting off your wings. Believe me your scream of pain in the morning haunted me for days. It left me alone until you came to Aurora's christening and cursed her. It's haunted me ever since." He explained as he handed me the dagger's cover. It was black with gold sewn into the fabric to form my horns first, next my wings, then my smile, and lastly my hands creating magic. On the back in lavender thread it read:
Dear Maleficent,
I'm so sorry for hurting you and I know no amount of apologizing could ever make up for what I did. Please accept this blade as a show of my guilt. I give you this blade as a way to protect yourself in times of need. I know it's not much, and I know what I did was cruel and selfish. Please try to forget what we once had and find someone worthy of your love and may they love you in return.
Your first heartbreak and hopefully last,
King Stephen, your orphan farm boy
I was shocked by his note. I didn't think he had regretted what he had done to me all this time, but he had and with a passion. "Thank you Stephen, it makes me feel a little better knowing you regretted what you had done. I will cherish this dagger as a reminder that you do have a heart. Thank you, again." I said as I held the dagger close. Hesitantly I leaned forward and kissed his cheek In thanks. 'What the hell were you thinking! He hurt you so why in the name of the Moors would you kiss any part of him! What if this is just a trick to make you weak again so he can attack you after you're done with the approaching enemy? What if this is just a game to him?' I thought to myself as I processed what I had done. "I-I think it's time for us to go. The threat is still coming quickly." I said trying to get as far away from Stephen as fast as possible. He nodded and we left the room with him leading the way. We soon joined the others and Diaval and Aurora smiled at my wings.
"They are beautiful godmother!" Exclaimed the little princess. "Thank you beastie." I replied. We soon left and headed back to the Moors. When we did I was surprised at how quiet it was as we walked through the Moors. Even when I was around the Moorfolk always came to greet Aurora. That's when we heard it. A sound I thought I would never hear again. A sound that was the only thing that scared me more than anything.
The sound of evil laughter. "Haha, Well what have we here? Haha, well if it isn't Maleficent!" Exclaimed the hidden voice. Out of the darkness came the only creature, the only person who frightened me more than anything. She looked identical to me. The only difference was our eyes. Mine were multi colored consisting of gold, green, hazel, and some blue while hers were a deep purple. Her wings were also a lighter black, looking like a deep gray. I sucked in a shaky breath. "Hello Mother."
