Violent red hair whipped her face as she ran chasing her big sister and her best friend. All three collapsed in the yard giggling madly. "Again! Again!" she squealed.

"I'm too tired Lily, I can hardly feel my legs! And look at how dirty I am now! I'm going inside for some water, don't run off," her older sister, Petunia, lectured. She was quite smart and bossy for an eight-year-old. Lily smiled at her, before turning to her best friend in the whole wide world. Severus Snape was not an ordinary boy according to Petunia. His long black hair always hung in his black eyes. His skin was pale despite the extraordinary amount of time spent outside mucking about. Lily's mum always said that he looked as if he never got enough to eat. Lily didn't care much about that, she was more interested in all his stories of magic and castles with ghosts. Their favorite game to play was Wizard Duel, they would gather an armada of random objects and toss them at each other while waving a stick about. Petunia said magic wasn't real and they were acting like children.

"Tell me one of your stories Sev," Lily asked, green eyes staring up at the sky. Severus began a tale of witches and wizards creating a school for magic called Hogwarts. It even had its own song, which he sang to her in a nasally voice.

Lily wondered why her mind chose this moment to be reminding her of her failed friendship. Perhaps because she was about to start her final year at Hogwarts, or simply perhaps because despite all the pain he caused her she missed his stories. Life was much simpler when she was six. Magic was a dream, a fantasy, and now she lives and breathes it. She smiled slightly to herself on that peculiar thought. Her musings were interrupted by the car coming to a stop. Her dad smiled at her, all crinkled eyes and wrinkles. "Are you ready Lilykins?" He asked.

"As ready as one can be," she smiled. He got out of the door and like a gentleman he opened her door for her. "I could've done that!" He laughed loudly.

"Oh I know my little flower, just let me take care of you a little longer," her dad joked, a sad smile gracing his face.

"Oh don't get all sappy now dearie. She hasn't even said bye to us yet," her mum, Jane, commented pulling her light brown hair into a small bun. She pushed a trolley in front of her, stopping at the boot of the car. Lily rolled her eyes with a smile. Her dad pulled out her trunk placing it in the trolley along with the cage holding her ginger Persian cat hostage. Her mum snuck the cat a treat before handing the bag to Lily.

"You spoil her mum, she's going to get fat!" Lily stated, her put out expression softened by her laughing eyes.

"I do not! Now give me a hug," Jane opened her arms. Lily stepped into them easily, holding her mum tightly. "I'm going to miss you so much Lilyloo." Jane's voice choked up a bit.

"Oh mummy," Lily frowned. "You can owl me anytime, I'll be home in a couple of months, plus you have Petunia and Dad. You won't even notice I'm gone." Her dad shook his head.

"We always know when you're gone. House is too quiet without you," he smiled, hugging her as soon as she was released from her mother's embrace.

"I love you both. I'll write, pinky promise," Lily said, eyes tearing up despite her best efforts. She released her dad, wiped her eyes, and stepped away. "Bye mum, bye dad!" Lily pushed the trolley towards Kings Cross Station. She didn't hesitate at the wall between platforms nine and ten. She emerged on the other side on platform nine and three quarters. It was a bustle of activity, wizarding families rushing back and forth in front of the scarlet mass that was the Hogwarts Express. Lily took a deep breath, it was like coming home. A place where she belonged. She pushed her trolley forward, dodging her fellow students.

"Lily! Over here!" the familiar voice of her best friend Marlene Mckinnon hollered. Lily whipped around to see the crazy blonde running toward her. She braced for impact. Marlene crashed into her, squeezing the life out of her.

"Relax Marls, we saw each other last month, I can't breathe woman," Lily laughed breathlessly. Marlene let her go reluctantly.

"One month is too long, now come on let's get on, Mary, Dorcas, and Alice are meeting us on the train. Let's gooooo," she pulled Lily along. Lily huffed and levitated her trunk and her cat cage behind her. They put Lily's luggage with Marlene's in an empty compartment, before running off to find their friends. Disheartened when their search provided no results they returned to the compartment finding it not so empty.
