Four boys sat in the compartment, all looking up when the girls opened the door. "Well, well, well. What a pleasant surprise. Red, Marls to what do we owe the pleasure?" Lily glared at the boy who spoke. His black hair brushed his shoulders as he shook his head.

"Sirius, how was your summer, darling?" Marlene, ever the people pleaser, asked.

"Good. How about yours dear?" Sirius grinned wolfishly. Lily rolled her eyes. Sirius and Marlene laughed. Another boy, this one with short hair and kind brown eyes, smiled at Lily pleasantly.

"Hullo Lils, what are you doing here?" the boy, Remus, asked smiling.

"You hijacked our compartment Rem," Lily replied with a sigh, already resigning herself to a longer than usual train ride. Remus scooted closer to Sirius as if sensing her decision to stay. She sat, then let out Chewy, her cat affectionately named after Chewbacca from Star Wars.

"Cat! CAT!" Sirius yelled, scrambling to get away from Chewy. The other three boys in the compartment laughed at this behavior while the girls exchanged glances. Sirius landed in Lily's Mortal Enemy's lap. Better known as James Potter. "Hello handsome." James rolled his eyes and shoved Sirius off his lap. "Betrayed by my only love, how will I ever survive? Moons, hold me," Sirius dramatically cried from the floor. Remus sighed and nudged Sirius with his shoe.

"You'll survive." Ignoring Sirius' indigent gasp he asked, "when did you get him?" Lily smiled as Chewy climbed onto her lap.

"Over the hols. Mum felt bad because Petunia was getting all the attention because she's engaged," Lily said. She checked her watch and swore. "I've gotta go, the Heads Meeting starts soon. See you at the Prefect meeting later Rem. Bye Marls, bye Black, bye Peter, Potter." She stood up handing Chewy to Remus, waved, and attempted to step out the door. She was stopped by another body. Lily looked up. She squealed.

"Alice! Mary! Dorcas! Hey! Where have you been?"

"Looking for you, obviously," Dorcas replied, rolling her eyes. Lily elbowed her.

"Marls is in there with the Marauders. I have to go to the Heads Meeting. See you in a bit, much love." With that she walked off ignoring the loud noises coming from her recently vacated compartment.

She entered the prefects' cabin, settling in to wait for her head boy. The door opened. Lily looked up and gaped. "Potter?!" She asked. Lily couldn't believe it, he has been in more detentions than anyone, not to mention he was never even a prefect.

"Don't act so surprised, love," James replied, a slight smirk on his face. She glared at him.

"How in Merlin's name did you possibly get Head Boy?" His smirk fell slightly before he masked it.

"My charm darling. Let's get started. I think we should put different houses together, maybe different ages for the train patrols," James said, already scribbling with his quill on the parchment. Lily found her mouth unable to close from the shock. He glanced at her. "What is it, Evans?" She closed her mouth.

"Nothing," she mumbled. Why is he acting so responsible, it makes no sense, she thought to herself.

After a grueling hour of planning and dispersing the schedules to the prefects, Lily set out on patrol with a fifth-year Ravenclaw. She made it back to the compartment full of her friends by the time the trolley witch came round. Lily had just opened the compartment before she was blasted in the face with rainbow glitter. "Oops, sorry Lils," Mary apologized, trying to smother her laughter. A hand pushed me into the compartment.

"Oh Merlin's saggy balls, Pads. Remus is going to kill you," James laughed bypassing Lily with a quick wink before sitting down. Lily smiled a bit at the sound of his laugh, it was a deep booming sound made to make others laugh. Despite how she felt about him she found herself laughing. Lily took one of the only available seats, which happened to be next to James. He shot her a surprised look. She merely ignored him.

"Remmy would never hurt me, I'm his favorite," Sirius declared, ignoring everyone's little giggles.

"Are you sure about that?" Remus asked in Sirius' ear. Sirius yelped. Remus raised an eyebrow. Sirius pouted exaggeratingly. The rest of the compartment busted into laughter, Lily fell over into James. Lily furrowed her brows as to why she wanted to lean into him more. She composed herself and scooted away from him slightly.

"Alright, Evans?" James asked, smirking a bit. She glared and moved farther away.

"Perfectly fine Potter," she snapped. The compartment quieted down watching the fight they could feel coming. James, instead of rising to the bait of a fight, turned his gaze to the window and hummed. Lily sighed, thanks mum for making me feel bad about my temper. "I'm sorry James, I didn't mean to snap at you."

James whipped his head to look at her.

"Did you just apologize? To lowly ole James?" James teased smirk returning to his face.

"Don't let it go to your head, Potter," Lily said, the corners of her mouth twitching up. She looked away, meeting eyes with Alice. Alice widened her eyes. Lily felt a hand brushing her hair away from her ear, she felt James' warm breath on her cheek as he huffed a laugh at her broomstick earrings.

"Too late, love." He withdrew leaving Lily with shivers running down her spine. The trolley witch knocked on the compartment door launching them all in action. Lily patted her pockets.

"Damn, I left my money in my trunk," she muttered to herself. She sat back down on the bench but scooted to the window.

"Hey Evans. You are in my seat," James smirked. The effect was only slightly ruined by the armload of candy he had.

"You left it, I am not moving."

"Stubborn little miss, well. Have it your way." James hefted her up with one arm and plopped down. He sat her in his lap. "We'll just share, love." Lily glared and tried to escape his grip, to no avail. She huffed then just got comfortable because even if she got out of his grip there was nowhere else to sit now. The compartment was not made for eleven teenagers. She placed her back to the window and her feet in Mary's lap. James, accepting her defeat, placed the candy in her lap. She snagged a chocolate frog, grumbling when she got another Dumbledore. James smiled at her before joining in the conversation happening around them. He placed his arm not holding a piece of candy around her waist pulling her in closer. She had never been close enough to smell pine shavings and broom polish coming off him. Lily let the gentle rock of the train and the warmth from James lure her into a small nap. She was only awoken by Sirius yelling something about Jily to which she kicked him across Mary. Sirius whined a little in pain. Remus hushed him. Sirius opened his mouth to say something before Mary slapped her hand over his mouth.

"Do you hear that?" Remus asked quietly. Lily, slightly more awake now, listened hard. She shook her head just as the lights in the train went off. Screams were heard from all parts of the train.
