"Are you kidding me!" I cried. My job was not easy, I mean with all the mortals being so smart as to being able to find the end of the rainbow, and gold production being down, I was sure to be fired any day now. You wondering about the gold production bit? No, oh well, I'll tell you any way. My name is Mackenna, and I'm a leprechaun. No, I'm not crazy, it's true. I, Mackenna Finnegan, am a small, red-headed leprechaun. But sadly, I'm not exactly normal for my race. I have blue eyes for one thing, very bright blue eyes. And I have no freckles of any kind. Plus, I'm tan all year round and have a very good control on my temper. Weird, right! But back to reality for the moment. "Jack said I had all week to find more pots, and all of the sudden he said that he has to have them right now!" This was crazy, my boss, Jack, is demanding that he has 25, 4 foot wide, black steel pots tall enough to hold 5,000 gold coins. Oh, and he gave me this assignment YESTERDAY!! How in the mighty name of Thor am I supposed to find, order, and have delivered that many pots in one day's time!!! I just don't get it.
"Listen, Finnegan, I'm just telling you what the boss man said, so don't kill me. He also wants you in his office right away so, I would get a move on before he blows a gasket," Andy looked at me sympathetically before jogging back to his post down the path. I walked over to the clock-in station and did the opposite, then walked through the forest to Mr. Delahanty's office. The boss man's office was in the dead middle of the Golden forest, inside of a giant glass box that is kept crystal clean so that he can see anyone coming from a mile away. The office was very well organized, with every object having a particular spot.
"Have a seat Ms. Finnegan," Mr. Delahanty told me, gesturing to the large brown armchair in front of his desk. I did as I was told and sat, trying to stay as calm as possible while keeping my anger in check because of.....recent events that I will get into detail about at a later time.
"You called, Mr. Delahanty?" I asked reasonably.
"Yes, obviously I did given that you are sitting in my office, and the purpose of you visit is simple. Did you or did you not give the location of the factory to a mortal?" He asked calmly, as if he wasn't accusing me of treason. Yes, giving away the location of our gold "factory" is considered treason against all of my kind. Harsh, right!
"But Uncle Jack, you KNOW I need this job!!! You can't fire me, I need to money for mums treatment. Phoenix tears don't come cheap you know!" I protested. My mom was recently attacked by a group of merpeople when she was looking for a place to hide the..... Crap I can't tell you a about that, you don't have high enough security clearance.
"That wasn't what I asked, did you or did you not tell a mortal!" he yelled, anger rising quickly.
"And I'm telling you that I didn't! Why would you ever think something like that?" I yelled back. What gave him that crazy idea? He knows me better than that! For Pete's sake, he practically raised me and my little sister.
"I'm just checking, because I received an anonymous tip saying that one of our best workers had double crossed us. You were at the top of a very short list." he admitted, looking ashamed of what he had done, all anger forgotten. "You know I would never be that harsh if I didn't have a good reason. Lily would kill me if I did that." he joked. It's true, Lily, my little sister, would scream and then attack anyone who even comes close to hurting me, which can be both good and bad, depending on who she's trying to hurt. Once she attacked one of my best friends who was trying to get maple gum out of my hair and my little sis heard me screaming, so she ran into the house and kicked Shannon on the shin. Ahh good times.....
"Mackenna?, Are you still in reality?" he laughed softly. He walked over to me and shook my shoulder to bring me back to the present time and place. "Thanks for coming down here Hun, now take the rest of the day off to look after your mum." he walked me out of his office and to the stables, and helped me on Figero, my beautiful black stallion.
==============================================================================
"Lily, I'm home!" I called as I walked through the garden. Home, the word that constantly was on my mind when I was in the colorful place. It just felt like home. The house was sung from tall majestic oaks, as proud and as strong as a bull. Inside there were three bedrooms, one for the each of us. There was a small sitting room in the middle, but all of the real living happened in the garden, because the kitchen, living room, and almost all of the time was spent there. I found Lily playing with a kitten, who was small and fragile as a tea cup, yet was jumping and flipping through the air like there was no tomorrow! It was amusing to watch, as it yet again managed to do a backflip into my sister's lap.
"What is that cute one's name?" I asked innocently, before she could ask if she could keep it.
"Velvet, 'cause she's SO soft!" she proclaimed in a proud voice, looking up at me with her green eyes flaked with gold.
"You know the rules better than me that animals must remain free, even helpless looking kittens." I sighed sweetly. "Lily, let 'Velvet' go." She looked up at me, trying to imitate a mortal with their 'puppy dog' face. "You know that it's not gonna work! Put the cat down and walk with me," I said with a small giggle, lifting Lily to her feet and taking one of her small hands in mine. We strolled for what seemed like hours, taking in the sweet smell of the blossoming flowers and clean breezes. "How was mum today, Lily?" I asked as we stopped in the Lady Slippers, watching small bunnies, hopping and tumbling on the dirt.
"She had a really bad coughing fit, or whatever you call it, but she was ok a little while after. She made me blueberry pancakes! They were so yummy, and warm... and yummy." She rattled on and on, about her adventures in school, and running in the fields with a group of wolf pups. Even as I tucked her into the goose down bed, she was talking and talking. I said good night to mother, and resigned to my room, letting sleep claim me in all of its wonders.
