"Roman! Come now, dinner is ready!" I hear my mom shout from downstairs.
I mentally roll my eyes and put down the piece of paper I am sketching on. Could dinner not wait until I was done with this? I think to myself. But I know of corse, you always do what you are told. Need no exception.

I stare in front of me at my large plate of extravagant food. Even though I have little to no interest in eating right now, with tons of eyes looking at me to see what I do, I give in.
"Ezra, table manners please." Father scolds my little sister who had picked up her chicken with her fingers. She pouts and sets down the piece of chicken before picking it back up the proper way,
"Mother, father. Can Ezra and I go play out in the meadow after dinner is done? It would be an excellent outing just the two of us?" I ask my parents with a napkin over my mouth.
Usually, I would've just gone back to sketching. But I need to be extra nice to Ezra today, because I have a secret, and she knows all about it.
"That would be alright, just be back before dark. I don't want you children getting lost."
Ezra and I thank them in unison and finish up our meals quickly. I thought the plan was going fairly well, until our gardener, Mrs. Barrette spoke up.
"If you would like, Mrs. and Mr. Remington," I look at Ezra with the I think she's caught on look but she avoids my eye contact and keeps staring in the distance. Mrs. Barrnette proceeded, "I could take them to the meadow, just so they don't get lost."
Just as I was about to bud in to the conversation and say something I would regret later, my father begins to talk.
"No, no that's alright but thank you for the delightful offer. I'm sure the kids will be able to handle it on there own."
Father gives a soft smile and moves onto another conversation. I let out a sigh and hand my plate over to the cook.
"Thank you for dinner, sir."
I never actually found out what the cooks name was so I just called him Sir. In our house, that's a fine name for a man. Though I prefer my own name, they still call me Sir sometimes.
"Bye mother, bye father!"
Ezra and I scurry to put on our outdoor clothes before they change their mind like they often do.
"Bye my darlings, be safe."
Mother kisses me on the cheek as we head out the door. The weather is pleseantly warm out, but not to warm that it's aggravating to go outside in the first place. Our house is miles away from any other house which gives me the sense of independence. This evening, there's no noisies but the birds and the sway of the wind against my back, which is more than enough. I've always been a one of silence. Ezra and I begin our small walk in the woods which leads us to our destination, the meadow.
"Roman, may I ask you, why did you ask me to come out here? You never want to spend time with me." Ezra asks, kicking the leaves in front of her.
I give a defended sigh and begin to tell her.
"You know how you caught me outside after dark, right?"
"Right..."
I contemplate telling her for a quick moment since she may feel I am using her but I proceed.
"Well, I need you to keep it a secret."
Ezra stops in her tracks and looks at me with her hands on her hips. A little bit too sassy for our way of life.
"You came to spend time with me just so I wouldn't tell Mother and Father about it?"
I rub my neck and look back in front of us, avoiding eye contact from her curious self.
"Kind of like that. But we can still go if you would like." I say while starting to walk again. She follows of corse.
"Roman, I wouldn't of told them even if you didn't take me out here. That would be an inconvenience to me also."
I smile at my oddly smart sister and give her a small side hug. The forest begins to turn into a large valley of hills and that's how I know we're here.
Ezra elegantly lays down beside me, breathing in the sweet air.
"I heard we are getting a maid." Ezra informs me after a loud silence.
I had not heard of this new coming so I cocked my head and looked at her with a questioning look on my face.
"Really? Since when?" I reply.
"Not sure. But I heard Mother and Father talking about it in the lounge last night after dark."
I laugh when I realize last night she was supposed to be doing school work last night, not eve dropping. But that's not the point she was trying to make.
"Woah. Ezra breaking the rules. Never heard of that before."
She rolls her eyes and playfully slaps my arm. Ezra and I were like complete opposite. I find the complicity of silence, and nature. While she is more intrigued by ones company, and things that someone could find elsewhere.
