Third Person POV
Ricky was tired. He was so fucking exhausted he thought he could fall over if someone blew air in his general direction. "Why don't you just go to bed a little earlier, Ricky?" Everyone would ask. If only it were that simple. It's not like Ricky didn't want to sleep, it's that he couldn't. It didn't matter if Ricky got into bed at 8:30pm or 2:30am--Ricky could never fall asleep until at least 4:30 in the morning, and once he did finally fall asleep he'd wake up every hour until seven am when he'd have to get up for school.
Ricky's insomnia had bothered him on and off for the past few years but with the stress of his and Nini's breakup and his parents' divorce and then of being the lead in a musical after never having performed ever in his life, Ricky was sleeping less than he ever remembered.
At first, Ricky was sleepy. He'd doze off a little in class or he'd zone out a little in rehearsals. He had to learn not to do that because he was missing important parts of his life! Ricky had to stay awake.
Then, Ricky was overtired. He had days were he was spastic and frantic and he couldn't stop racing around because his brain was so tired he went into a frenzy at the same time each day when it realized he wouldn't be able to take a nap or have a full night's sleep starting at two in the afternoon.
After that, Ricky turned into a zombie. He was so tired he barely had the energy to move or pay attention in class, let alone be the lead of a musical. This wasn't boding well for Ricky.
"Ricky! I need more energy from you! This is High School Musical, sweetie, not Zombies!" Miss Jenn shouted as Ricky failed to deliver one of his lines with the enthusiasm it should've come with.
Ricky said, "I'm sorry, Miss Jenn. I'll try harder."
That was what he kept saying to everyone; that he'd try harder. The thing is, Ricky didn't really have much left to give. He was pretty sure that at this point this was the best it was going to get.
Ricky tried the line again.
It still wasn't enough for Miss Jenn. "Ricky, where are you right now? Where is your head at? Why are you not here?"
It took Ricky a moment to think of an answer. "I'm just...I'm tired."
"I can tell that just by looking at you, honey. We're all tired, though, and if every one of us gave up when we were tired we wouldn't have a show!" Miss Jenn said. "I really really need this from you, Ricky. Just a little more pep in your step!"
Ricky was sure that if he tried to put more "pep into his step" he'd pass the fuck out. Actually...that might not be so bad. No! Ricky couldn't pass out. He needed to be present for rehearsals. He needed to fulfill his role as the male lead.
Ricky turned to Nini and tried to deliver his line as cheerfully as he could, except he completely fucked up the wording. The tone was there, though. Ricky was sure the entire auditorium could hear Miss Jenn's sigh of annoyance.
"Ricky, you have to at least try a little! Please, work with me here! Everyone else is busting their tail, and I'm sorry but you haven't gotten a thing right today! What is wrong?" Despite her words, Ricky could tell she really didn't want to know what was wrong, she wanted the scene done and she wanted it done right.
Even though Ricky had heard harsher words and kept his eyes dry, tears started to build in his eyes. Ricky tried to blink them back but he ended up having to wipe at one of his eyes to prevent the tears from falling.
