I sat on my bed, fingering with Matt's promise ring. I couldn't see the ring but I never wanted to look at it again. I clutched it tightly in my hand. I can't believe I was so naive, so stupid. Of course Matt wouldn't stick with me if something happened.

My phone rang and with practiced movements and an accurate guess I hit the accept button. " Hello", I asked quietly.

" Jess, it's Maddy, how are you", said Maddy.

" Oh Maddy I've missed you, I come back to school tomorrow and I'm looking forward to hanging with you and Lisa and everyone else", I whispered.

" Jess I'm coming over, I need to talk to you", said Maddy and then she hung up. I waited impatiently and worridly, what other bad news would there be.

A few minutes later I heard my door open and felt someone pull me into a hug. I recognised the strawberry scent immediately.

" Oh Maddy, Matt dumped me because he couldn't be weighed down by a blind girlfriend", I whispered.

" I know, I heard him tell Harry but Jess forget him, if he can't see how wonderful and beautiful you are inside as well as outside even without your sight, he's the idiot and the one that has lost, not you", whispered Maddy.

" But Maddy I was going to tell you before this happened gesturing towards my eyes, he was my first and he gave me this", I whispered and I held up the ring.

Maddy was silent as I assumed she was looking at the ring. Finally after an agonizing long time she spoke. " Jess I believed what you had with Matt was real but he's just a wimpy asshole for not being able to stick by you in a time like this, even when he gave you a promise ring", whispered Maddy.

" I know what you're thinking, why did I have sex with him", whispered Maddy. I sighed and nodded. " The answer is simple, you were living in the moment and how were you to know what would happen afterwards, if we never took risks, we would never move forward", said Maddy and I knew she was smiling.

" Geez Maddy, how did you get so wise?", I giggled.

" Ah you know, books and actually paying attention sometimes", laughed Maddy. We laughed and it felt so good to be with Maddy.

" So what's been happening at school", I asked.

" Jess, people are feeling sympathetic but they don't actually understand and well Lisa for example has been well kind of rude", Maddy said bluntly.

" What's she saying is like I bet she will be begging for attention now that she is blind and I said well she will need help Lisa but she will still be Jess", whispered Maddy.

" Oh Maddy, I'm so glad you're my best friend", I whispered hugging Maddy close.

" And why would I ever turn my back on you, you are still my beautiful best friend and Rachel and I will be your eyes from now on", laughed Maddy. "I'll be in charge of pointing out and describing hot boys and drama and Rachel can handle the educational stuff", said Maddy.

I laughed and hugged her again. " Thanks Mads", I whispered.

" Tell you what, let's take that ring and throw it into the ocean, fitting don't you think", Maddy asked. I smiled and nodded.

" Yes, new start", I smiled as Maddy helped me up.

...

" Ready", Maddy asked and I nodded. We stood on the rocks near where Matt and I first met. The wind whipped my hair, spray of salt water, refreshing. " Just aim straight and the ring is history", said Maddy.

I lifted my right arm, holding tightly to the stupid ring. With a smile I threw it as hard as I could. Maddy commentated what was happening.

" And the ring glints in the sunlight, soaring high and it's falling, falling and it's gone, floating to the bottom of the ocean", said Maddy. I laughed as she helped me back towards the car. My heart ached knowing I could never have real love but as long as I had someone like Maddy, I think I'm going to be okay, hopefully.
