I let out a deep sigh. Looking out the window brings me sweet serenity more than being a lawyer brings me. I love doing my part in helping. Yet it pains me to witness death sentences.
At this point, I am frustrated, I look away from the world outside and start to reel back into reality. I examine my desk and notice a letter addressed to me. As I walk towards the letter and grab it I hear a knock at my door. I grunt in annoyance. Why must everyone disrupt me and the serenity I barely have? As gently as possible I put the letter back on my desk and walked towards the door. I opened it only to find my right hand man outside.
Samuel Leonard de Kyezarr. In a way somewhat of my son. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to see it like that. Samuel is about nineteen now that I think about it. I have known him since he was an orphan. I was about twenty-two years old and he was about six years old. Yes. I'm thirty-five. That's besides the point. He has well maintained raven smooth hair, a little bit over shoulder length. His eyes a deep dark brown. He was always a quiet boy. Loved to live in silence and serenity.
He barely spoke when around the crowd. I was an exception to that rule though. When he is tired of socializing though he usually closes his eyes and just makes gestures. I have known this since I met him, that would probably be the reason why we bonded so quickly. We understood.
"Ma'am." I rolled my eyes and placed my hands on my hips.
"How many times now do I have to say it. You don't need to call me this "Ma'am". Just use my name."
I could see the irritation on his face and he spoke, "Unfortunately for you I would never do that."
"And why not?!" I said, pouting, getting vastly irritated myself.
"I respect you too much as my superior to ever change my way of thinking." With that statement my irritation dissipated and I sighed giving a small smile.
"You really respect me that much, don't you?"
"Of course, Ma'am."
"Then that's all I will ever need and you by my side as my partner in crime." I smirked seeing his reaction.
He scowled in response, "Ma'am. Why must you always use that phrase to ruin something of which was so precious?"
I rolled my eyes, "You know I was joking."
He smirked and closed his eyes, "That I do, Ma'am. That I do...""Now before you entered my office I was about to open a letter I found on my desk. Do you have any idea of whom it's from?"
He opened his eyes, "I do believe it would be another case..."
I looked at the clock, "Oh my! I dear say I know why you are here. It's about time for us to head for the carriage?"
He only gave a nod in response. Alright then. Quiet time. I walked towards my desk once again and picked up the letter. I opened it to find a case about thievery. I sighed. I continued to read what had been in the letter until I found that the person I was trying to pose as innocent was none other than a child... boy... around age... maybe... nine? I was shocked to say the least. Why must a child be put on trial?! At least give the poor lad a warning and a chance to prove himself! My body shook with rage. When and where is the trial... London... Fleet Street? In... TWO WEEKS?!?! I slammed my hands on the table.
"Ma'am?" I slowly turn my head to face Samuel.
"Sam... unfortunately... I don't think we will be going to the mansion anytime soon. Did you pack my things?"
He nodded and bowed, "As always for emergencies, Ma'am."
"Money?"
"785,950."
