A workaholic is what I always described myself, but since Maria and Theo, I had learned to prioritise my time, always making them number one on my list.
So when the doorbell rang in the afternoon, I felt Maria's disappointment, mainly because it matched my own, but she plastered on a smile and got up to answer it.
"You going to work now?" Theo askes looking at me with his big eyes.
"I am, buddy." I tell him, wondering if he will have another episode like he did last week.
After a few weeks off, I went back to going on the road, but Theo was having none of it and staged a category 5 meltdown, with screaming, crying and wailing for me to come back. It frightened me more than anything, it's not that he hasn't had tantrums before, he has his moments, like every child, but I had never seen him lose it, begging me to stay home. It was only when Maria pushed me out the door with Bacon that I realised, she had dealt with it before.
"But I am coming home later." I promise him, as he went all quiet.
"Pwomise?"
Smiling, I reply "Pinky promise."
Picking up his rabbit, he hooks it under his arm and comes over giving me a cuddle. "Will you bring me home a toy?"
I go to reply with yes, because I would give my heart and soul for this little tiny human when Maria comes in.
"Theo stop shaking down daddy for more toys, you got so many already. Maybe we should look at those later and decide which ones we give to good will?"
Theo pulls away at the idea, thinking it over. "So I can have more?"
Shooting a look at Maria, she goes to make an argument but fails and I begin grinning. "We will see.." I tell him, kissing him on the forehead.
"Bacon!" Theo shouts, pushing off me to tackle Bacon's legs.
"Sup dude?!"
"Daddy said he's gonna get me a toy!"Bacon laughs.
"Is that right? What toy do you want?"
"Don't encourage him, I'll have a list as long as my arm.." I mutter getting up.
"Well funny you should mention toys, I have one in my car. It's not mine. So it must be..-"
"For me? Is it for me?" Theo asks looking between us all for some kind of hint.
"Let's take a quick look!"
Like a shot, Theo is gone and Bacon is tailing after him. Shaking my head, I laugh. "That boy has some serious super power."
"You know he shakes down Aaron like this too.."
"He doesn't." I answer.
Maria cocks a brow. "Oh babe, you haven't see anything yet. Ask Aaron what he has got Theo for christmas. I swear I'm going to have to take his card away from him. That man must have bought half the store."
"But Christmas is-"
"Months away. I know. When has Aaron ever been prepared? Never. Luna has been pulling her hair out, every day their is a delivery guy on the doorstep."
I have to laugh, earning myself a playful swat from Maria who is also smiling slightly. "He is one of a kind." I answer as Theo comes bombing through the house with a box under each arm.
"LOOK!"
I crouch down to his height, and watch as he drops them onto the carpet and gets tearing at the boxes. "What did you get? Anything for me?"
