I walked down the silent corridors heading for my room. Something was off, but as usual I brushed it off. There were so many a day where I would get back from my lessons that the halls were empty and quiet. Of course, no one would want to be in the hall where you would find the bastard child of a king.

I sighed rubbing my shoulders and neck trying to get the soreness out of them. Even though I was the bastard child, I was forced to do all the same lessons as my three younger brothers. Even if it was obvious I would never get the crown, I had to learn the royal obligations and everything else if I ever did become king.

I eventually made it to my door after thinking about how much I hated what had happened today. I had to fence with my brothers and they were more skilled than I was. Yet I still managed to win against one of them, which was weird. He gave it all his best and lost, while I was able to get past his defenses and win.

I shook my head at the thought that my brother lost on purpose. It was impossible for him to willingly lose, yet I felt more powerful than I ever have, and that says something. I was a witch, wizard, warlock, whatever you wanted to call a supernatural human being with powers.

The whole royal family used to have powers, notice the used to. They were at one point cursed by a powerful witch who took their powers. It was weird since, I never got to know my mother but from what I had heard she had no powers and my father, the King, had his taken from him.

I let out a breath that I was holding and opened my door. Before I could walk into my room, I was pinned against the wall near my door with a dagger pressed against my back. I then heard a beautifully low, soft voice say, “Good bye.” I started chanting a spell, but stopped when I heard a thud and a clatter of the dagger. I looked behind me to see my servant, Adrian, holding his pan towards my assassin.

“What do you want to do with him?” I looked up at Adrian and chanted a spell that lifted the assassin into the air. There was a strong pull towards him, the one that only happens when mates find each other. The type of pull that only werewolves, vampires, and demons could ever have. Witches had no pull to each other, like that.

The pull was there but not as strong as demons, werewolves and vampires. The pull of a witch was weaker, since we were half demon and half human. Our human side had lessen the strength of the spells, mates, and so much more.

I walked into my room, with Adrian trailing along, and to the servant door. I felt along the wall trying to find the hidden panel. I felt a bump in the smooth wall and pulled at it. It had opened soundlessly and quickly to my liking. I saw the staircase that led to a hidden tower in the castle. It wasn’t hidden, but the entrance was.

The reason for this tower was to hide me when I was younger. My father didn’t want the Royal Court to know about me and his affair. It was strange since the affair had happened before my dad had found his mate, the Queen. The woman who gave birth to me was some whore that my dad had a fling with before my dad had met my mom. I didn’t like the whore, but the Queen treated me as one of her own.

I went up the stairs, turned a corner to see the dreaded door from my childhood. My parents would visit along with my brothers, but before now, I was locked in that room since I was born. It was the place where I played, eat and sleep, but since one day the secret slipped out, everyone knew about me, yet no one cared. I was the mistake that the King loves, which to everyone, that seemed to be the reason for them to like the King.

I opened the door and laid him down on the bed. It was nice not having to lift a finger to get him here. I stared at him as he laid unconscious, not being creepy at all. I sighed knowing that this was going to be some rocky relationship. “Come on! We have to go before someone notices us!” Adrian had grabbed my arm, pulled me out of the room, and closed the door. I glared at him as he locked the door and proceeded to drag me down the stairs into my room.

“I have a question.” I glanced at him, knowing full well my attention was short on what he had to say. “What are we going to do with him?” I shrugged my shoulders and said, “Protect him, I guess. We just can’t let him die or get hurt.”

“Why?”

“He’s my mate.”
