"Since she's going to be your step-sister, Lilly is going to New York with you." My mom said to me. She's making chocolate waffle batter and it smells actually amazing. Her hair's in a messy bun on the top of her head, and she's wearing large glasses that make her look like a just-out-of-college hipster. It's strangely a good look for her.
"Yeah, it'll be a good experience for the two of you to get to know each other better!" Francis says, putting his arm around my mother's shoulders. She gives him a kiss on the cheek and I pretend to gag. She spins out of his embrace and pours some batter into the waffle iron. Then she turns and looks at me for my opinion on the matter.

"Okay, I guess I'm down with that." I say agreeingly. I had been waiting for this trip since last February. I couldn't wait to see dad.

"Moo...m! I'm ready to go!" I say standing at the door waiting to go. I have a suitcase of clothes, a duffle bag of other stuff, my wallet, and my skate board. I wish I could've brought my guitar, but it's too big to fit in the trunk of my mom's car. Lilly was standing next to me half asleep. Her eyes were drooping, and I felt a little bad that she had to be up at this hour. But we had to get an early start if we wanted to beat traffic. Well, the traffic going TO New York. Can't escape traffic once you're there. That's not how New York works.

"Why do we have to leave so early...?" Lilly whines yawning. I laughed and ruffled her hair. She had these loose curls that just were so perfect, I was jealous.

"So that we can enjoy the view in the daylight in New York, and beat heavy traffic. Don't worry Lily. We can sleep the whole way there." I check my watch. 5:25.
"Mom! I'll just meet you in the car!" I say.
"Be right there!" She calls from the bathroom.

I'm riding through downtown New York City. Then it happens. The cd gets stuck. Dad trying to eject it. The car drifting on ice. Dad losing control, spinning out. I black out.
