Chapter 2

Julie POV

In amongst the rabble of screaming school children, Luke and mines eyes meet. Sharing words that don't need to be said: "We need to sing our way out of this. And fast".

He grabs my earlobe – it is still so weird that he can touch me now – and pulls me from the sports hall with the last few rounds of bullets getting quieter and quieter in the distance. Luke's beautiful voice leads the way with singing a ballad/rap about the importance of running fast when faced with a flock of angry seagulls who want to steal your chips.

"what's going on Luke" I gasp. I am out of breath as we run down the deserted hallway.

"I'm not certain" he says pensively, and like a Canadian person if they were trying to conceal their accent in order to fit into an American character. "but I could hazard a guess. Caleb."

I'm shook. This is a lot more serious than I first thought! Caleb may not have any respect for the living as the eternal undead but I do! And this is not cool.

"come one Luke. Let's regroup at home."

Reggie POV

I'm in the kitchen, making a sandwich and it is around 10'clock. I know I should be at school but... something came up.

Suddenly someone appears at the bottom of the stairs my heart does a little flutter when I see that it is Daddy Ray.

"Reggie! What are you doing here? You know school comes first" he looks at me sternly and I am frozen with my knife midway to buttering the four slices of bread I have laid out for the sandwich.

"I'm so sorry Ray! I just popped back during my study period. I haven't missed anything I swear. Actually I was just going back for the rest of my lessons!" I babble on and abandon my half-made sandwich as I head for the door. I get as far as the front porch when Ray grabs onto my arm.

"Wait Reggie! Something is bothering you I can tell. Please just come back and we'll talk about this! De hombre a hombre! ...you don't even have any shoes on and you're trying to walk back to school..."

I succumb to his firm and reliable grip on my arm and allow myself to be led back inside. We both drop onto opposite sides of the sofa in the living room, bodies angled towards each other.

"Now Reggie, what is eating you?"

I sigh and look down into my palms. I am finding this topic difficult to come to terms with in my own head let alone to speak my worries out loud, but I feel Ray's intelligent and caring eyes bore in to me. I know he won't judge me.

"well... it's just..." I begin slowly then it all comes out in a rush of garble "well I didn't have the best upbringing. I am an only child to parents who were always fighting. This is why when there is any form of loud noise I physically recoil, shut my eyes and throw my hands up, a defensive stance, as although it might not be my fault that these noises are occurring I know that they will negatively impact me. And well you are so completely not like that, Ray. That solid and reliable, supportive way you treat me? Well, I cannot lie to you... it is making me... feel things." I blush and finally look up through my eyelashes to gauge his reaction. His face is un-readable but he scoots closer to me on the sofa.
