Then he went into the "monsters are real" talk, which shockingly didn't take as long as usual.
Adam nodded. "Okay, so... basically, you're saying that every movie monster, every nightmare that I've ever had, that's all real?"
Dean shook his head. "Godzilla's just a movie."
"We hunt them. So did Dad," Sam said.
Adam nodded. "Okay."
Dean furrowed his brow. "Okay? That's it?"
Adam shrugged. "What am I supposed to say?"
"That we're liars, that we're crazy." Dean shook his head. "Nobody just says 'okay.'"
"Well, you're my family. You're telling me the truth, right?" Adam asked.
Dean nodded. "Yeah."
Adam shrugged. "Then I believe you. Now, what took my mom?"
Sam shook his head. "We're not sure. Something's in town stealing bodies, living and dead, but we don't know what."
"There's a long list of freaks that fit the bill," Dean said.
"You think maybe she might still be alive?" Adam asked.
All three of us looked down, not answering.
Adam sighed and nodded. "Oh. How can I help?"
Dean shook his head. "You can't."
"This thing killed my mom. If you're hunting it, I want in," Adam said.
"No," Dean said firmly.
Sam sighed. "Dean, look, maybe—"
Dean snapped a look at Sam. "Maybe what?"
Sam shrugged. "He lost his mother. Maybe we can understand what that feels like."
"Why do you think Dad never told us about this kid, Sam? Huh?" Dean asked, "Why do you think he ripped out the pages?"
Sam thought for a second. "Because—"
"Because he was protecting him!" Dean shouted.
Sam shrugged. "Dad's dead, Dean."
"That doesn't matter! He didn't want Adam to have our lives, okay? And we are gonna respect his wishes," Dean said, fiercely staring at Sam.
"Do I get a say in this?" Adam asked.
I shook my head. "Probably not."
"No!" Dean shouted.
Sam shook his head. "No."
I nodded and whispered to Adam. "That happens a lot."
Dean walked toward the door. "Babysit the kids."
"Where are you going?" Sam asked.
Dean grabbed his jacket. "I'm going out!" he shouted and then slammed the door behind him.
Sam sighed and shook his head.
"Is he always like that?" Adam asked.
I shook my head and shrugged. "He's just really protective."
Sam laughed. "Welcome to the family."
Adam looked down.
"Here." Sam pulled out a gun and ejected the clip. "I'm gonna teach you a few things."
"Sam..." I said with warning in my voice.
Adam nodded. "Yeah, uh, Dean said—"
Sam nodded. "I know what Dean said." He held the unloaded gun out to Adam. "And I know what it's like to want revenge."
