Since Middle School, I've struggled with some depression and my schools have never helped. Piles of homework and grades dropping have only made me stressed, overwhelmed, and depressed. In my freshman year of high school, 3 people, including my own sister, tried or did commit suicide. One on campus, behind the softball field. That person being a former student. Mental health was never a topic of discussion until those tragic events. I feel in some way addressing mental illness and how to reach out to others, could've helped prevent these tragedies. Mental health is something that should be talked about because of how it affects younger teenagers. Bullying, harassment, isolation, stress, grades, pressure to succeed, and the list goes on and on. These are all situations that conspire at school or because of school. Schools need to have resources that a student can reach out to and feel safe talking about mental illnesses. On a national scale, only 40% of students with mental health disorders graduate. () Young adults are struggling to succeed, but educating them on their mental health and how to cope can push them to succeed. If you're reading this and you struggle with a mental illness or disorder, you are not alone. Hold our education system and schools accountable. Push them to educate themselves and students about mental health. This is not just a "problem". These are real lives. These students are young and capable. You can help by educating yourself about mental health, suicide, depression, and anxiety. Help others by helping yourself.
