Alrighty- this is the last chapter of the arc!! (Excluding a Backstory chapter thats being posted right this second- but it isn't as necessary to read that). Might take a while for me to update the third arc, cause I only have like two chapters done, and it takes me so long to complete them nowadays- ;-;
Anyways, enjoy 😉

You had no idea how long you'd been here.
A small apartment complex, that's where you resided for the majority of your days. You would've felt trapped if it wasn't for the fact there was lots of entertainment and that in general, it wasn't a cell.
It was Ranpo's apartment, the young childish detective somehow managed to support the two of you. He always was here in the late afternoons and nights, or on the free days off when he didn't have work. You had asked him about more details on his job, but he simply stayed with the 'detective business'. You knew it was more than that.
"Y/n!"
Watching as the brunette bounded through the open door, you only leaned back into the couch. You hated to admit it, but you had accustomed yourself fairly quickly to the routine and way the boy lived.
"Ranpo-san," you acknowledged back, eyes passive as they rested on the book you'd been reading. Despite being stored away in a small apartment, the boy had offered you a large quantity of books, a lot of them having to do with the education you'd missed all those years with Dori.
The boy held up a bag, probably dinner as he happily skipped towards the table centred in between the living room and kitchen. You gave it a stare before putting the book down and stretching your arms. It wasn't like you never left the apartment either, you went on runs and did other things that were normalized. The brown haired detective was helping you uncover a normal life anyway.
"So I went past that high school the other day," Ranpo said in between bites of whatever was in his hand. "And they said they were giving exams next month, you've been reading all the materials so-"
You stood there frozen, mind catching up to his words. "You... asked for me?" Your voice drifted in the air, softer than you'd probably ever spoken. Usually your tone was firm or strict, calculative.
"Of course I did!" He said with a smile, you saw him reach for another chip bag, splitting it open with ease.
Why would he...?
You felt an unnecessary pang in your chest, and lifting a hand as of to touch it, you couldn't explain it. Dori had never done anything to you other than give you a home and food, you had appreciated it nonetheless, but he never gave one thought to what you wanted.
Staring at your perplexed state, the boy then snickered. "You're supposed to say thank you." He said in a snappy tone, although you could tell he was amused.
"Oh- thank you."
~~~~~~~~
This was a terrible idea.
To be quite fair, it wasn't your idea to begin with, so you wouldn't be taking credit for any misfortunes or accidents that the boy in front of you got into. More like you were dragged into this, thrown in a mess that you were now expected to solve.
Chuya...
I swear-
"Chu..." you attempted again, reaching out to the ginger haired boy as he swayed side to side. You'd been seeing a lot of him more recently, having hung out with him almost everyday after work. You'd either call or take a walk around just to talk, and it felt surprisingly nice to be around him so much.
